Nola and John Long
The Long family of Logansport is decended from Nola & John Long. Nola Ellen McGuffin Long was born Sept. 13, 1883, possibly in Tennessee. She died Aug. 8, 1979, in Logansport, at the age of  96.  John Avis Long was born Apil 22, 1880. He died on Oct. 30, 1952, in Logansport. Nola was the daughter of James and Mary Elizabeth Grigsby McGuffin. John was the son of Edward and Mary Ann Couch Long.  Relatives have traced them to the Bulls Gap, Tennessee area. They were married on Dec. 25, 1897.. She was 14. They had 14 children. The children included daughters Anna, Margaret, Hazel, Agnes, Freda, Vivian, Betty and Georgia, and sons Charles, James, Mryl, Garold (Gene), John (Huck), and Donald.. The family eventually moved to Delphi, Indiana. Don't know exactly when the move took place or whether it was a straight move to Delphi, or if there were stops in between. We know that the family was in Delphi in the early 1930s because of basketball pictures of Delphi's varsity team. Old family stories say that Nola and John moved to Delphi because at least one of their sons was recruited to play basketball at Delphi.  The only sons high school age during that period would be Gene and Huck. The family was then apparently recruited by Logansport Basketball Coach Cliff Wells to move to Logansport. That story can be somewhat substantiated in the fact that John Long was a custodian at Logansport High School with responsibilities in the Berry Bowl.(Logansport High School's gymnasium).  I can remember as a young child going to the Berry Bowl where John Long let us into the building. The family porbably lived in several homes in Logansport, but I remember only two - in the first or second house on the east side of 12th street between Spear and George Streets, and on the alley on the south side of the 2000 block of East Market Street. Some of our relatives say that they have traced the family tree back to relatives in  England. Ancesters also fought in the Civil War - on both sides.
Garold Eugene (Gene) Long and Elizabeth Catherine Berndt were married on June 11, 1943, in Logansport. Elizabeth was the daughter of Albert and Catherine Holle Berndt. Both worked at RBM manufacturing which eventually changed names several times and was White-Rodgers manufacutring when it closed. Matthew Warren took over the building during the early 2000s. Gene died while still employed at RBM. Elizabeth quit to raise a family and then worked at the Logansport High School cafeteria for several years  before retiring. The couple had eight children listed below.  Gene was a WWII veteran serving in the army. He did not serve overseas. He spent most of his army tour in Camp Roberts, California.  He played high school basketball at least in Delphi, verified by a picture of him on the 1936 Delphi team. His brother, John (Huck) was also said to be a good varsity basketball player, and old family stories say that Huck was the reason the family was enticed to move to Logansport. Gene and Elizabeth lived in the Berndt family homestead at 1804 Smead St., throughout their married life, and all eight of their children were raised in that home.
