| Class V2 2-6-2 Designed by Gresley & considered by many to be the finest mixed traffic design of all if not Mr Gresley's best design full stop. 184 of the type built, entering service in 1936. The first of the class No:4771 named "Green Arrow" after the LNER's fast freight service form London To Scotland. Althought designed primarily for fast freaight the V2's power and speed were also very useful in deputising for a Pacific on express passenger trains. During World War 2 the class gained a reputation for being able to handle enormous loads and on the LNER became known as the engines that won the war. One example remains, No:4771, preserved at the National Railway Museum, York. |

| Bachmann V2 Bachmann's V2 was released back in 1991(?) and was the first RTR model of the type available. The major dimensions of the model are very close to correct but there are some detail upgrades that are required to make the model really capture the V2's look. The biggest fault is the trailing truck under the cab, bachmann's version doesn't even get close to looking right so I've fitted both of mine with a new truck made from plasticard & Comet Axle box castings, as you can see the underside of the cab is vastly improved. The second problem is the dome, 4801 below has a replacment white metal dome fitted and the boiler looks much better for it. The V2 has Bachmann's older split frame type chassis and both run well but this type is quite difficult to install DCC decoders into. |
