| Class C12 4.4.2 Tank Engine. Designed by Henry Ivatt for suburban passenger services. Specs: No' built: 50 170 or 175 psi boiler 5' 8" Driving wheels 18000 lbs tractive effort (roughly) First in service in 1898. |
Class P1 2.8.2 Designed by H.N.Gresley for heavy (100 wagon) coal trains. Only two ever built No's 2393 & 2394, put into service in 1925. As new specs: 180 psi boiler, 3 cylinders, 5' 2" driving wheels, 38,500 lb tractive effort + 8,500 lb when booster engine on trailing truck engaged.. The two P1's spent their working life on the New England to Hornsey coal run but the class was never multiplied as 100 wagon trains were found to be impractical and therefore loco's of such strength were not needed, both were withdrawn from service in 1945. |
Class A1 4.6.2 Designed by H.N.Gresley for express passenger trains. First introduced in 1922 by the Great Northern Railway, 2 built before GNR became part of the LNER in the 1923 "grouping",Third A1 built being the first express engine built by the newly formed LNER . Built in 3 batches by Doncaster & North British from No's 4470-4481 & 2543-2562 (Doncaster) & 2563-2582 (Nth Brit) all in service by July 1925. Specs: No built :52 180 psi Boiler,3 cylinder, 6' 8" Driving wheels,29835 lbs tractive effort. The class as a whole were upgraded with improved valve gear from 1927 & all were converted to A3 specifications by 1948. Last withdrawn in 1965. |
Class A3 4.6.2. The A3's were basically an improved version of the A1's and outwardly looked very similar. Visual differences include super heater header covers on the sides of the smokebox behind the chimney, and all A3's built new were set up for left hand drive with ejector pipe & valve control rod on that side of the engine (A1's were right hand drive,compare this picture with the one above) Specs: No built: 27 220 psi boiler, 3 cylinder, 6' 8" Driving wheels,32900 lbs tractive effort. First in service in 1928, all were built at Doncaster in 3 batches numbered 2743-2752 (1928-29),2595-2599 (1930) & 2500-2508 (1934) last withdrawn 1965. |
Class V2 "Green Arrow" 2.6.2. Designed as fast freight engines,the class also proved usesful on passenger trains so are generally considered as mixed traffic engines. Specs: No: built: 184 220 psi boiler,3 cylinders,6'2" driving wheels,36000 lbs tractive effort. First in service in 1936,built in 16 batches shared by Doncaster & Darlinton works (majority at Darlington) numbering from 4771-4899 & 3641-3695, last withdrawn December 1966 |
