Mariya Takeuchi

"That's like the worst of seventies pop" -Victor Powicke

This page is dedicated to finding out enough about Mariya Takeuchi as is reasonable. She is virtually unheard of in this country, so tracking down information on her has been extremely difficult. She has a small webpage to promote her CDs, and is signed under Time-Warner. I have a recording of her CD Quiet Life on audio cassete, and a song which might be Junai Rhapsody on a mix tape.

Mariya Takeuchi was born on March 20, 1955, and she began performing in 1978, which means that Victor was right about the decade. She has recieved two Record Taishou Awards, one for best singer in 1990 and one for best album Quiet Life in 1993.

My first impression of her music was that it was exactly what I had been looking for: simple, catchy melodies and japanese lyrics. I termed it "Japanese Country" because of the strong guitar lines and simple, country influenced beats, and this it remained untill I learned enough to find out who she was.

This page could not have been possible without the help of Natasha Tomich, who provided much support in translating and transcribing song titles and names.
