Ch 21
Desperate for changing
Starving for truth
Closer to where I started chasing after you
I'm falling even more in love with you
letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you
"Hey Abby? You busy tonight?" Dave asked.
"Yep. I have a hot date with my laundry room. Why?"
"Jing-Mei's not feeling to hot so she's gonna go home and crawl into bed but I have tickets to this gallery opening."
"You have tickets to a gallery opening? An art gallery opening?" Abby stared.
"I know, I know. She really wanted to go so I got the tickets."
"And now you're stuck?"
"Exactly."
"Sorry, not interested. Why don't you see if you can't sell them to Weaver or Romano?"
"Not a bad idea. Thanks Ab."
"No problem." Abby grabbed some lab results and went to find Luka.
Forgetting all I'm lacking
Completely Incomplete
I'll take your invitation
you take all of me
now I'm falling even more in love with you
letting go of all I've held on to
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you
Abby hummed to herself as she folded the laundry she'd just taken out of the hamper. As she folded she tried to remember the last time she'd heard this song. She'd just folded a pair of Faith's socks when the doorbell rang. She shot an annoyed glance at her watch and hurried to the door. Hope hadn't been easy to get to sleep tonight and she didn't want to take any chances.
She swung the door opened and took an involuntary step backwards. "Oh my God."
"No, but it's okay. God and me? We're often confused for each other." John's easy grin made her smile too.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah. I am. Can I come in?" He smiled.
"Yes. Come in." Abby moved aside and let him in. She closed the door behind her but she didn't lock it. Not yet. "So where have you been?"
"Well first I went to the Dominican Republic."
"Really?"
"Yeah." He reached inside his pocket and handed her an envelope. "Here. Read it."
She opened it up. Once she read the first few lines she looked up. "You got a divorce?"
"Legal and binding. I didn't want to start the whole process again. I just wanted it done with."
"And now it is. Does she know?"
"I sent her a copy of the papers. Cowardly I know but I didn't want another scene."
Abby nodded and folded up the papers again. She handed them back to him. "You probably want to put those somewhere safe."
"Yeah, I will." John put them back in his pocket. He looked at her. "What?"
"You're divorced."
"Yes, I am."
"Think this is where I came in." She said jokingly.
"No. It's different this time."
"Right." She looked down at his hands. "No more wedding band?"
"It's now residing at the bottom of the ocean."
"I see."
"Abby?"
"Does this feel strange to you? I mean you're sitting in my living room telling me that you're divorced. While most of me is ecstatic, there's this little part of me that's reminding me that I know you and because I do, I know that you've only ever wanted to be married once. That's the part that's terrified."
"To the right person."
"What?"
"I've only ever want to be married once to the right person. Ava wasn't it."
"Oh." Abby nodded. "Any ideas on who this right person might be?"
John pushed her hair behind her shoulder. "A few."
Abby nodded. "Lucky girl." She shot a glance his way. "It is a girl, right?"
"Yes, it is a girl." John smiled. "Someone I've known for a long time."
"Really? And you didn't snap her up already?"
"Well I almost did once a few years ago, but she has this tendency to get spooked."
"Really? I think I may know whom you're talking about."
"Really?"
"Yeah. And if I'm right, fear is always going to be apart of the equation. But, she's willing to work on it. You know, if you are."
"I am."
"Me too." Abby smiled. She sighed and then shot a look at the clock on the wall. "It's late." She said.
"Yeah." John nodded.
Abby stood up. "I'm on at seven tomorrow morning. I should go to sleep."
"Right."
Abby nodded and started for her room. Just as she reached the door she turned around. "Hey."
He looked up. "Yeah?"
"I don't think I locked the door. Will you do it before you come to bed?"
John stared. "What?"
"Will you lock the door before you come to bed?"
"Yeah. Sure."
"Good. See you in a few." She turned around and went into the master bedroom.
John got up from the couch and made sure the front door was locked before he turned the lights out. Then, with a smile that could have lit up Chicago, he went to join Abby.
