White Dwarf 249 Review
White Dwarf 249 - UK Edition
Monthly Gaming supplement & Citadel Miniature catalogue
Published by Games Workshop
3.50 UK pounds - 4.99 US Dollars
This is a review of the UK edition and content of White Dwarf magazine. Actual contents does vary depending on the country that you are in.
White Dwarf 249 is the second issue promoting the huge Armageddon event that is taking place this summer, check out the website here www.armageddon3.com for more details. As to be expected it is very Warhammer 40,000 heavy again although Warhammer does get a mention in both editions - both new and old! Also it offers a complete review (with results) of the Warhammer 40,000 tournament that happened at GWHQ UK about 3 months ago. Here is the overview of this months White Dwarf magazine.
GW News - Da Nooz
The White Dwarf news section still has the Armageddon look in keeping with
the current pomotion There is a another long editorial from Fat Bloke
explaining all more about the Armageddon campaign. Althought I cannot
shake the feeling that even the rotund one is having trouble coming up
with something new to say every month. There is nice personel bit about
Graham Davey (White Dwarfs resident wordy) getting his black belt for
Akido - well done! Nice chap and he can throw you by your nose hair! More
sneak previews of new Warhammer miniatures in the form of a plastic
regiment of Empire Spearmen. Another personel touch in the news about a
group from GW climbing mountains for charity. And a letter quoting the
virtuals of the good gaming spirit shown by Jervis Johnson in WD245 battle
report. Finally finishing off the news section is the
Black Library given us all
the latest from their dark pages
Armageddon the War Wages on...
Fat Bloke urges us all to battle on and the article also doubles up as a release page
for Mad Dok Grotsnik and the fanatical Salamander Chaplain Xavier. It keeps
the theme of Armageddon going, but it would of been nice to have rules for the two special
characters though.
Big Gunz & Armoured Fist
The next 3 pages of the Armageddon section are more release pages showing
all the entire Steel Legion selection of Imperial Guard a month after the
Armageddon campaign has popped - good timing GW make everyone wait a
month until they can complete their Steel Legion regiments (only the
biggest Imperial Guard force serving on Armageddon). Still I love the
Steel Legion Sentinel (very ST-AT or is the AT-ST?) and its no more expensive than the
normal plastic kit - so I know what Sentinels I will be buying from now on.
The final release page are the big guns for the Ork armies... nice new
Rigger Grots.
And They Shall Know No Fear
Two more release pages this time for the Black Templars and Space Marine
Scout bikes.
Cometh the Hour...
A nice piece of fiction from the pen of Dan Abnett (famous for the Gaunt
Ghost stories) pitching the Imperial forces led by Commissar Yarrick
against a recently landed Ork Rok. Its a nice break from the release
pages and adds a little excitement to the rather now bland (for this
issue) Armageddon look
The Invincible Army - The Quest is Over!
Does anyone remember the little competition run back in WD243 by Alessio
trying to find the army that could beat his best ermm competitive army...
Well someone did it, its quite entertaining and a nice way to see out
Warhammer 5th edition.
Chapter Honour
Not sure what these 2 pages are supposed to be, nice chapters conversions of Land
Raiders apart from that its a little bland. Perhaps a more detailed guide
on how to convert your tanks? Instead of this pictorial - even more tactics would of been nice.
Index Astartes - Emperors Shield - Space Marine
Chapters of the Armageddon War
This excellent series continues by documenting all the Space Marine
Chapters that are serving on in the Armageddon War- plenty of scope for
colour schemes here. I love this type of background.
Fanatic Catalogue page
Fantic live up to their promise of serving the fans in these two Catalogue
pages featuring Citadel Miniatures for Warmaster, Mordheim, Epic 40K!!! and
Tyranids for Gothic. Check out the Fanatic
website for more details.
Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament 2000
The complete review of the gaming weekend a nice entertaining read and
full results - round by round!. Brings a little character to these seldom reported on but
important gaming events.
Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament 2000 -
Unlimited
Just when you think the reporting is over Nick Davis (ermm me.. oops)
bring us the report of the tournament he ran at the weekend. A much more
personel report than the Grand overview and a couple of nice quotes. I
still smile at the fate of Liam Dawson's Khorne Berzerkers. 80 attack dice and no dead Orks.. Oh dear...
Index Astartes - The Black Templars
Another Index Astartes this time the Black Templars - are these guys cool
are what! I am going to put my neck our and say that the Templars are going
to be the most sort after Space Marine Chapter ever! I love all their
background. I hope there is going to be a compliation book coming out soon for all these fantastic Index Astartes what a great sourcebook that would be (:
Historical Actions of the Imperial Guard - Regiments of
Armageddon
Nice piece of background on 4 regiments from Armageddon - problem is
now I want to have the miniatures of them. Again adds more colour to
Armageddon and I love the illustrations particular favourate is the Death Korp Trooper..Achtung baby...
Warhammer - the Preview
A preview and quick overview on the new Warhammer from the prospective of
the its Chief developer Tuomas Pirinen. A nice taster and its got my mouth
watering for the new miniatures. Looks like the its gone WH40K where its
more important to have troops than rock hard characters.
Warhammer 40,000 Battle Report - Warzone Tempestora
Its huge! The second part of the first Armageddon battle report... I wont
reveal the ending but I loved the concept of this battle report and as I
mentioned last month it goes to show what you can do when you get all your
mates around and just play a huge game. Loved the prospective of the way
the report was written... It would of been great to see more pictures of the
other tables... big thumbs up to Phil Kelly the guy who had to collate the
information for this battle report. Well done old Chap.
Mail Order - New Releases
Steel Legion Commissar (Mail Order only!)
Steel Legion Lieutenants
Steel Legion Imperial Guard
Steel Legion Heavy Weapon Teams
Steel Legion Sentinel Salamander Chaplain Xavier
Space Marine Scout Bikers
Mad Dok Grotsnik
Ork Big Gunz
Summing up
Yet another good good issue of White Dwarf from the team. I would not say
though that this was any better than last months in terms of content and
the Armageddon articles seem to be a little luke warm considering that
this was the month after the campaign. The White Dwarf was very
background heavy again - perhaps this time a little too much. With the two Index
Astartes, Imperial Guard and Ork bits. I would still like to see a few
more hobby orientated articles alongside couple of exclusive rule
articles. Don't let the Fanatic boys steal all the thunder lads, this magazine
should be the first point of contact of the hobby and it is still sadly
lacking in the hobby areas. Again not an essential buy for Warhammer fans
the preview text should keep their mouths watering for the new game. Well
until next month this is the score on the doors...
