I (Agent Eight) try to bring you one of the best 40K web sites in the world, it's a very hard task so I decided to interview some of the Games Workshop staff for you! I've managed to get an the exclusive interview with White Dwarf writer, NICK DAVIS! and subjected him to 20 questions chosen by my 40K discussion group. Read on to see how he did.
Vot is your name?
Nick - My given name is Nicholas James Davis, my mates
call me Nick - as only my wife and my mother can get away with calling me
Nicholas.
40KU - Lol mmm, I'll call you nick ;) *giggles like a school girl*
Nick - Ahem... Well as long as you don't call my Nicky that is fine. Anyhow... My Web handle is LMStandUK which actually stands for Last Man Standing. Its a long story all about too many late nights playing Quake into the early hours on the net, got so good at it I became known as the Last Man Standing. Its sort of stuck, plus its a by word for honesty and a really cool Japanese Samurai movie - not to be confused with the Hollywood version with Bruce Willis.
40KU - Not a really long story, but that explains alot :)
Vot is your age?
Nick - 27
40KU - Just 9 years older than me then ;)
Nick - Oh, lordy I am old timer in hobbyist standings - bloomin Whippersnappers
Vot
is your Quest? (sorry, too much Monty Python)
Nick - To find the holy grail - for the king and the land are
one (say in a really squeaky voice)... Lol Seriously my quest is to be
good to earth.
40KU - Whilst collecting Dark Eldar, mmm :)
When did you start
playing 40K?
Nick - Can I remember that far back? Hrmm, lets see I
think I was 11 when I brought my first game from a GW store it was the red
Basic edition of Dungeons & Dragons. I started playing WH40K in the
year that it came out I think I was 13 at the time.
I went into the Nottingham store and brought the rulebook, 30 plastic Space Marines (gawd bless the RTB01 Marines) and 3 Rhinos for 20pounds - oh, those where the days when you could get a pint, a loaf of bread and still have change out of 10pence for your tram ride home.... lol
40KU - You ARE old ;) you can buy a eye drop of english petrol for 10p these days :)
Nick - We started playing the games in my Dad's garage using bits of wood for cover and lots of lovely lichen. Space Marines Vs Space Marine battles as no one wanted to be the Orks! We even used lots of cheap and nasty plastic sci-fi kits for vehicles. When the Zoids came it was a blessing (anyone remember the Sand Crawler?) Improvisation was the main key though that and having fun. Not much has changed really accept I don't play in my Dad's garage anymore.
40KU - No, just Games Workshops Garage ;)
What did you do at GW?
Nick - Well I wrote for White Dwarf magazine as their
resident hobbyist. My main job was to simplify all those scenery tricks by
telling you exactly how it is done. The idea being if I could do it anyone
can
40KU - You do a good job, keep up the good work *pats Nick on the back*
Nick - Thank you - the best is yet to come check out... Oops almost slipped up there for a second.
Where was you born?
Nick - 1973 at St Margarets hospital, Melton Mowbray (home of
the pork pie) and I believe it was 7.13am in the morning and it was
raining.
40KU - Can I call you LMSPorky? (pork pie, get it? oh well, I'll keep taking my medication)
Nick - ....
What are you
modelling/painting at the moment?
Nick - Just finished reinventing my Space Marine Army -
the Emperors Eagles - into a crusading force (see WD246). The finishing
touch was the Emperors Champion
40KU - I'll have to look into my pile of White Dwarfs for that (could take years!)
Nick - Ermm.. try looking at White Dwarf 246 were I try to explain how to paint a Land Raider - after explaining how to build one in White Dwarf 245 (yes those are all my fingers in those hands on shots)
What army is the
hardest to defeat?
Nick - I've always found that Space Marines are the
hardest army to beat. Particularly the Blood Angels - rock hard assault
troops in power armour with initiative and strength bonuses when charging?
40KU - Yeah, and the Space Wolves are hard to beat too, but I hate Eldar!
How did you get your job
at Games Workshop?
Nick - I was out of work when the design company I worked
for went bankrupt. I actually phoned up the Mail Order department and
asked for a job and for my sins I got one. Lol, since then I worked my way
up into the Design studio and finally into White Dwarf..
40KU - You struck it lucky then, so your advise is to bite the bullet (not really) and go for it!
Nick - Yes, although I was helped by having a serious design background (I worked for two years after leaving design college in a technical design studio) Then an unhealthy passion for the games.
Is there anyone at GW
that you despise? Who?
Nick - No... Although there where times when gaming against
Gordon Davidson when I tried to defeat his damnable hard Blood Angels. The
guy has the luck of the devil and you can never figure out how to beat
him. As you are sweating it out over your next tactical decision in your
turns, his turns just fly by without a care on his face.... Damn he is
good... Mutter..mutter
40KU - I can roll 6's on demand! I say before a battle "How jammy am I?" and I roll a Jam on the Artillery Die ;)
How much money do you
make? Legally?
Nick - Never enough - legally that is
40KU - LOL, I asked that one ;)
Have you ever worked
for a living?
Nick - Not if I can help it - the trick is to make the
work look easier than it is he,he,he.
40KU - Does Fat Bloke approve? ;)
Nick - I have no idea - just kept the cogs turning in White Dwarf by making the impossible possible. Wait until you see the Space Hulk I (with a little help from Rich Baker) built in less than 4 days for the massive Armageddon multi-player battle in WD248/249.
Why is there so many
typos in White Dwarf, when you've specifically got >a Wordy Bloke to go
through and spell and grammar check everything?
Nick - Get a White Dwarf and then get an Army book I can
guarantee you - that you'll find more errors in an army book (they have a
team of three wordies and much more time). Wordy does an excellent job
helping turn my english into english
40KU - am gud at inglish enyway ;) See it's harder than you all think ;)
Does GW HQ really have
a dungeon?
Nick - Where do you think we keep the Games Designers?
40KU - LOL, is it true that Adrian Wood has his own Kennel? ;)
Nick - You might think that but I cannot possible comment.
When are you going to
open a store in South Africa?
Nick - I really have no idea - although if they do I want
to attend the Grand Opening
40KU - Yeah, that Question came from Andrew T (the Guy that is creating the Chaos section to this site)
Do Ogryns really have
'uge exhausts? (gorillas only have 2" you know)
Nick - I thought Ork bikers had uge exhausts? They have
really big guns - I love rippers..he,he,he
40KU - That's what I thought, I guess South Africa are REALLY desperate for a store ;) Luckily I live an hour away from the Nottingham HQ :)
What is your favourite
Simpson's episode?
Nick - Any Homer orientated episode - lets face it its all
about him not Bart.
40KU - Yeah, Bart Sucks, Homer Rules and Marge and Lisa? well, lets not get into that <:)
Nick - Yes, I think that is best left unsaid
Who is your number one hottest chick in the world?
Nick - Well I did have a thing for the ever bouncy Britney
Spears - but the all time hottest chick in the world for me is Louise
Rednapp gawd bless her doe like eyes... Ermm my wife is not going to read
this is she?
40KU - Depends on if she comes to this site ;)
Nick - Gulp.. hurried movement towards the favourite list.
What is your favourite
food?
Nick - Pizza with Pepperoni and mushrooms with a hot cup
of tea.
40KU - Mmmmm, I've just eaten a Pepperoni Pizza, no Mushrooms though <:)
Nick - And I bet you had a lovely cup of tea as well. Mutter, mutter.... Bloomin colonists and there inability to make a decent cup of tea.
Ummm What is your
favourite colour?
Nick - Red... no blue.. wait.. ARGGHHHHH!!!!!
40KU - LOL - Thanx for agreeing to this, I appreciate it a lot and good luck in the top 40k sites ;)
