"The Imperial Guard, Imperiums last line of defence against the Alien hordes"

Now I am a big fan of the Imperial Guard, somehow they seem all the more heroic than the genetic supermen that are the Space Marines. After all they face untold dangers with only a lasgun (as useful as a flashlight in somecases) for defence, I mean its easy to be heroic in armour that can stop everything short of a lascannon shot. But back to the Imperial Guard, or rather their Codex.

The book is the usually 48 page affair, Army list in the front with a colour section explaining how to paint, collect, and even play with the rather unwieldy formations of the Guard. As per normal with the background is sparse although I like the DPS of the sketches of different types of regiments - one of my favorites is the Bushmen of Serico. Can you say wouldn't give a castlemaine 4X's? I know I do grip about this in every review of the Codexes I get my hands on but comparing it to the old second edition book you feel that you are robbed of some of the rich background of the Imperial Guard. I've heard though that steps are afoot to change the lack of background in these books - so lets keep our fingers crossed.

The army list gives you a nice rounded Imperial Guard force which is heavy on men and very light on tanks. Forget large formations of armoured vehicles as these and other different Imperial Guard regiments will be dealt with in a series of Plug-in-Codexes. The first of which is Codex Catachans which I will be reviewing shortly (as soon as I get into Philli!). A nice touch in the Codex itself is the small plaques at the bottom of the army list pages that detail the achievements of notable Imperial Guard regiments - although a lot of them are very feral looking, surely they must be some civilized regiments out there? - ie Preatorians or even the Mordians!

The colour section is rather nice, it gives plenty examples of camo paint jobs and a brief treaties on how to organize your Imperial Guard army into a fighting unit. More painting tips though would be nice.

Its another nice Codex from GW that again does everything it says on the cover.
