LMS Remembers

Today marked a very special day for students and staff at Lewisporte Middle School. It marks the official opening of our technology lab which is now known as the “Connection Zone”. All students, staff and special guests attended the special ceremony to show our appreciation for the generous donation from “The Rockefeller Foundation.”

The greetings were made by the Lewisporte/Gander School District representative Mr. Charlie McCormack. Also greetings and a prayer was said by Pastor Russell Bartlett, Philadelphia Tabernacle. A drama presentation of the LMS drama club was fantastic. Victoria Whalen brought greetings to us on behalf of our bilingual friends. Two of our grade 9 students, Matthew Fancy and Laura Small, expressed appreciation for what the wonderful people of the Rockefeller Foundation did for us. Next, the grade 6 band put off a spectacular performance for everyone, which was indeed a pleasure. After that there was a thank you to the Rockefeller Foundation by Megan Roberts and Miranda Bursey in grade 7. The choir sang a wonderful selection “Can you Feel the Love Tonight” directed by Leslie-Ann Langdon  and accompanied by Mr. Whitt on piano.

Mrs. Coish cut the ribbon for the official opening of the tech lab and everyone saw it on the big screen. Justin Ropson sent an e-mail to Ms. Denise Gray Felder, and in return, she sent a slide show by the Board of Trustees. Megan Abbott, a grade 6 student, read a poem entitled “Daddy’s Day”. A teacher’s comment was done by Mrs. Wanda Wheeler. The LMS Junior Band performed great.  They played “Sax Attack” and “When the Rhinos do the Rhumba in the rain”.  Mr. Whitt was asked why he thought the songs were suitable for the opening of the “Connections Zone” He said that the songs played by the bands were songs that were being worked on. “It was a chance to display the talents of the students,” Mr. Whitt said. “It was a very good job and the kids enjoyed it.” He also said, ‘The kids are getting better and continuing to improve.”

A grade 8 student, Carolyn Pumphrey, thanked everyone, and a grade 9 student, Jessica Sheppard, sang a beautiful solo “Except For Grace” and did an excellent job. LMS Jazz Band was the last to perform. They played “Go Daddy-O”. Several of our invited guests were interviewed about their thoughts and feelings about the ceremony. Pastor Bartlett said the donation from the Rockefeller Foundation was a great contribution.  The Mayor, Bill Hooper, attended.  He said, “The entertainment at the ceremony was great, especially the Jazz Band.”  Charlie McCormick, the Director of Programs for the School Board, was very much impressed by the performance of the students who participated.  Bill Sceviour, Chairperson of the Board, said, “This School has the very best computer lab compared to the 10 other School Districts across Newfoundland.”   Mrs. Coish said that she was very appreciative of the gift money from the Foundation and thankful for their generosity.  “This way it is really hoped that everyone will be current in technology education at the Middle School level.”  She thought that all who took part in the ceremony did a fabulous job.

Remembrance Day Assembly

On November 8th, 2002 Lewisporte Middle School had their assembly for “Remembrance Day”. It started off by an opening prayer that was read by Tiffany Sampson. Shortly after, the flag party did the marching on of the flags, while the grade 8 and 9 band played our national anthem “O’ Canada”. The next thing on the list for the assembly was a poem called “Please Wear A Poppy”, which was read by Adrian Hynes and a poem called “Attic” was also read by Adrian Martin. After the poems the grade 8 and 9 band played 2 songs for the assembly. One was called “Sax Attack” and the other was called “When the Rhinos Do the Rumba in the Rain”. After this 3 students were asked to tell what Remembrance Day means to them. The first was Latoya Verge from grade 7. The second was Courtney Tetford from grade 8. And the last was Chad Roberts from grade 9. Mrs. W. Wheeler also expressed her feelings on Remembrance Day, which was followed by a song done by

Mrs. Lesley Anne Langdon, and Mr. Whitt who was on the piano. Next Jillian Whiteway and Jessica Keeping recited Flanders Fields. Jillian recited the poem first in French, and Jessica recited it in English. After, each class presented a project they their class had done, reflecting on Remembrance Day. Devin tucker, who has several relatives who had served in the war, played the “Last Post”, which was then followed by a moment of silence. The assembly concluded with the singing of the “Ode to Newfoundland” and finally the dismissal of the flags. Lest We Forget!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

  SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

When you snap your fingers, does the sound occur when your middle finger releases from your thumb, or when your middle finger hit’s the palm of your hand?

How come in the mini Wheat’s commercial’s, Sweet’s has a Brooklyn accent and Wheat’s has a English accent? They’re attached at the back, wouldn’t they have been raised in the same place?

Congratulations To

 Jessica Oake

On November 11th, 2002, Jessica Oake won a Gold Medal in the Juvenile Ladies Category at “The Bank of Montreal Financial Group Sectionals”.  Jessica had to skate for two to three days, and the final decision was made on the third day. Jessica was quoted to say that the recent competition was, “awesome”. She also said she wasn’t nervous, just determined to come out a winner. We asked her how long she practiced and she quoted, “about four months.” Jessica said that she made lots of new friends and met a lot of her old ones at the competition. She also told us she would love to make skating, a professional career when she gets older. In January, 2003, she will be going to Ontario for a national competition. Of course, with such a positive attitude, Jessica had to come away a winner.

GIRL’S VOLLEYBALL

We recently interviewed some of the players from our Girl’s Volleyball Team, who won their first volleyball game of the year, against Greenwood, and they had some very interesting opinions about how their first game went, and also about their training.  One of the players, whom we interviewed from LMS was Jillian Whiteway.  She told us, “Each game, as well as practice, teaches you new things about the game and it improves your skills.  However, as the scores of the games showed, we have had more training than our opponents.”

We also interviewed Laura Small from the team on how she feels about her contribution to the team.  “It’s hard to say.  I’m not the best, but I’m not the worst either.  I guess, if I made the team, I can’t be as bad as I thought, but we’re all good as a team.  Even if there are a couple who aren’t the greatest, as long as you work together, it should work out great!”

Last, but not least, we interviewed Allison White, who is also on the LMS Volleyball Team, about how the team’s practicing is “readying” them to play.  She said, “We haven’t practiced enough, but in time, we will get better.  We’ll still try our best in future games!”

We would like to introduce this year’s school Volleyball Team.  The members/students involved, and their numbers, are as follows:(14) Laura Small, (13) Jessica LeDrew, (1) Danielle Watkins, (2) Allison White, (4) Nicole Wareham, (15) Melissa Hart, (7) Jillian Whiteway, (5) Courtney Tetford, (8) Jade White, (10) Tiffany Samson, (9)  Christina Marshall, (6)  Carolyn Pumphrey, and (11) Kelly Collins.

LMS JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

Members of our Junior Girls Basketball Team are as   follows:

Ashley Perry, Christina Marshall, Danielle Watkins, Nicki Wareham, Kristen Janes, Adrienne Martin, Miranda Bursey, Carolyn Pumphrey, Allison White, Courtney Tetford, Victoria Whitt, and Chelsea Jacobs.

IT MUST BE MAGIC!

Gary Summers was at our school on November 20, 2002, during Drug Awareness Week, to talk to Grades 7 – 9 about drugs and alcohol.  He used magic tricks to explain what he was talking about.

Hope Ryan, Andrew Martin, David Hann and Jillian Whiteway were just a few of the students who helped Mr. Summers with some of the tricks.  One memorable trick was when he changed a five-dollar bill into a hundred-dollar bill.  I wonder how he did that?
