Materials:

- Fabric: Evenweave - not recommended for Aida
- Backing Disk: light cardboard is fine
- Padding: flack fiberfill, 2 pieces of  felt, etc
- Ribbon: 1-1/4" heavy coordinating ribbon
- Thread: Use double strand to gather fabric and ribbon

Instructions:

- Cut a backing disk 1/8" larger than diameter of design
- Cut padding 1/2" larger than disk
- Stitch a circular running stitch 1/2" larger than design
   leaving 3" tails
- Center padding on backing disk
- Center design on padding;
- From back gently gather�design around padding and
  backing disk to create"button" and even out gathers
- Glue padding and fabric to back of disk
- Cut two 5" piece of ribbon
- With remaining ribbon stitch running stitch 1/4" from inner
  edge of ribbons leaving tails for gathering
- Gently draw threads and gather ribbon into a circle so
   that the inner edge is apx 1/2" narrower than the
  diameter of the button
- Glue tails to back of ribbon at angle and length desired
- Slip safety pin through a gather on the back at the top of
   the button where it joins the gathered ribbon so that the
  metal will not show

This is an example of the type of button/ribbon the instructions will produce.  I created the originals on a whim as prize ribbons for a St. Patrick's Day Chili Cookoff:  Best Chili with Beans, Best Chili without Beans, Hottest Chili - that sort of thing. I made this one for myself. The center of the "green" ribbons had the shamrock and simple wording and it was quick to stitch and assemble  5 or 6. Everyone who made chili got a ribbon, and the unusual party (including the green Green Chili chili) was a hit.
