Masako Kinoshita teaches

LOOP-MANIPULATION (l-m) and KUMIHIMO
BRAIDING TECHNIQUES

The following are examples of l-m workshops.  All are hands-on and include a talk on the structure and track-plan.  Materials may be supplied by me or by the host group.  They are intended for all levels of braiding experience.  The maximum number of participants is 15.

WORKSHOPS (L-M TECHNIQUE, GENERAL)
For this type of workshop, each participant receives a text and sample notebook to which the samplers made during the workshop are to be affixed.

1-Day: Demystifying the loop-manipulation technique
Making samplers, starting from the simplest maneuvers of loops, we explore how l-m braiding might have started and developed.  Referencing several different directions of development of finger-held l-m techniques recorded in the Tollemache Book of Secrets, a 15th century English record, we make samplers that represent these directions.

2-Day: An introduction to kute-uchi, the reconstructed Japanese l-m braiding techniques
The first day's program is the same as that for the 1-day workshop above.  On the second day, we learn the similarities and differences between kute-uchi and Tollemache techniques.  We discuss features of the construction processes of kute-uchi braids.

4-Day: Basic Procedures of "kute-uchi," reconstructed Japanese l-m braiding techniques
There are 11 procedures which have been reconstructed from the original 19th c. documents.  The approach of the workshop is similar to the 2-day workshop above.  Using the procedures, we make samplers in various color schemes designed to help in understanding the most significant features of kute-uchi.

PRODUCT ORIENTED WORKSHOPS
(Materials are supplied as a kit)

1-day: Make a five-petal flower pin. (finger-held l-m)
Flower Pin
You learn three basic 5-loop procedures of finger-held loop-manipulation.  Then, using a combination of two of the procedures, you make a braid which will be shaped into a flower pin.

2-day: Twice braided bracelet ("kute-uchi" finger-held l-m)
Twice Braided Cho3ker You learn to make flat braids about 9" long using finger-held techniques of kute-uchi, as many as time allows, in various structures and color schemes.  Then, you choose three or four from among those made and braid them to form  a bracelet.

4-DAY ADVANCED COURSE WORKSHOPS
may be offered -- LEVELS 1 TO 7 for those who have taken the 4-day basic course workshops above or mastered the basic 11 procedures on their own.  Please inquire.
