Mauget Newsletter, New Year's Eve, 1998

Page modified 01/19/00 08:30 PM

"'Yes we have no bananas...we have no bananas today..." Alice Ryan Mauget singing to her grandson, Louis Edward Mauget jr., circa 1950

Where Have You Been?

Actually it's "where have I been?" As my job picked up its pace I started to travel much more after I started this web site. I also had to do a lot of writing and programming on my own time. I've been home for a couple of weeks over the holidays trying to restore my house to a saleable condition. Today it's very cold, for North Carolina. I have some dry rot to repair outside. I'd rather take a beating than go out there, so I'm working on this site instead.

Spokane in June

I visited Spokane, my brother, my cousins, and some Mauget graves in late June, 1998. We had a  nice picnic on a beautiful day.

Other Journeys after Spokane

Last summer and fall I traveled to:

  • New Orleans for a Microsoft conference. They can say "Mauget" correctly!
  • Redmond, Washington for a Microsoft lab class. The Spokane trip was a side-trip.
  • Washington DC. Presented at SHARE conference. Shot pictures of Monica Lewinsky emerging from the courthouse, of Clinton going to Martha's Vineyard -- and returning when we bombed terrorist enclaves. I admit I wasn't too busy that week! I'd rather site-see than edit web pages.
  • Toronto, Ontario to give presentations at IBM.
  • Hursley, England -- same presentations. This was a neat place! I presented in the ballroom of a manor house where the Spitfire was designed in  WW II.  For what its worth, I ate rack of lamb in a pub next door to where Jane Austin died. Life is good.
  • Denver, Colorado to attend another Microsoft conference.
  • San Jose, California -- the same presentations at IBM.

Vincent Mauget

I found a web site written in French that pictured a young Mauget called Vincent. I'm ashamed to say I know no French, but English is close enough that I could get the gist of the site. I emailed Vincent. He replied in English. He was surprised that there were Mauget's in the US. He talked about the Protestant-Catholic split caused a lot of Mauget's to emigrate to Canada -- the Arcadians. Those, in turn, migrated to Louisiana -- the Cajuns. He said that some Mauget's spell their name as  Mauger, which is pronounced the same. That opens up a whole new avenue of exploration. When I was on active Army duty in 1964, they had my name spelled "Mauger" for six months. I was always afraid I'd have to repeat those six months under the name "Mauget." It turns out its just two spellings of the same pronunication.

Jeannette Carlin Mahony

Jeannette contacted me through this site in November. She is descended from Mary Carlin as are we Spokane Maugets. So we share a great-grandmother. She says she has found the parish in Ireland where James Carlin, Mary Carlin Mauget's grandfather was baptized. She has done quite a bit of genealogy, some of which overlaps what I've learned about the descendents of Mary Carlin and Jules Jean Mauget.

Jeannette was the second extended family member to contact me this way. I met a man in Minnesota who is related through my paternal German grandfather's side of the family. We share a great-grandfather. Enough said here. It's not of much interest to any Maugets except my siblings, but I do like the communication power of the web. Neither of these contacts may have happened without the internet.

Site Computer Trivia

Skip this section if computers bore you.

I've imported the site back into Front Page 98, which will make updating the site an order of magnitude easier. I won't have many excuses about neglecting updates. I originally constructed the site in Front Page 98, but found that Geocites had a flat directory structure that wasn't consistent with Front Page.  I hand-crafted everything from then on. Later, Geocities made subdirectories available. After importing the site back into Front Page I can  WYSIWYG edit a flock of files in Front Page and hit publish. Everything shortly appears on the Internet. Easy.

Close

We'll do this again soon. Happy New Year and have a Happy end-of-millennium.

Cordially, Louis E. (Ed) Mauget, [email protected], December, 31, 1998
