Davenport, Iowa

The original family farm was in Davenport. Mary Carlin Mauget and Jules Jean Mauget settled there. He was a builder of roads and bridges in France. The region may have been the Alsace. He had trouble there with the authorities. He came to the US and married Mary Carlin. See their pictures.
He was reportedly not a hard-working farmer. His wife and children did much of the work.
There are stories of the murder of Jules and his six-year-old daughter, night riders, a poisoned well, and even a hunchback named Oscar Mauget. By one account, the attackers were Carlins. Another has Maugets attacking Maugets.
My Aunt Bonnie, of Boise, Idaho told these stories to me. She took notes while interviewing Lucille Mauget, of Davenport in 1989. Lucille said she had worked with Ronald Reagan in Davenport. She showed Aunt Bonnie the site of the original farm.
Lucille is living in Davenport. We need to get the stories directly from her. Apparently, she is one of the last living links to the old farm. I found her sister's obituary at http://www.quadcity.com/qcnewslogin/archive97/JUNE/060597/obits.html

Davenport, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus,
Davenport. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial is in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe Funeral Home, Davenport, with a rosary to be recited at 6:30. She was born April 2, 1912, in Davenport, to James A. and Agnes C. Franey Mauget. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. Survivors include sisters and a brother-in-law, Lucile Mauget, Davenport, with whom she resided, and Betty and Eugene McCabe, Davenport; a niece, Cindy McCabe, Davenport; a nephew, Eugene McCabe Jr., Bettendorf; and four great-nieces and nephews. |
