Legend from Amazonia
Illustrated by Lúcia G. Maier
A long time ago lived in the forest a happy couple of indians. The happiness would be complete if they had a child. They always dreamed in having a baby but the child didn't come. So the couple decided to implore to the indian's God , Tupã to give them a child. Tupã heard their requests and in s beautiful morning a strong and healthy boy was born.

All the indians in the village were very happy with the good news!

Forest

Day by day the child was becoming stronger and clever. He liked to learn the secrets of the forest with the older indians and his parents. But they didn't explain him about Jurupari, the evil's spirit.

They thought he was still too young to know about so terrible creature.

The good qualities of the small indian spread through the forest.

When the envious Jurupari took notice of so lovely person he was very angry and violent. The evil spirit decided to observe the boy to find a way to harming him. He could be invisible and it was easy to control people without been noticed. But the boy was always escorted by an older indian. The only place he used to go alone was a fruit tree near the village. He loved to climb the tree to eat the sweet fruits.

Guarana
Jurupari discovered it and he had a terrible idea. He changed himself in a snake and when the boy went to eat the fruits again the snake pricked the little indian. The poison was very strong and the child died soon. The indians were shocked when they knew what happened. The boy had learned how to avoid snakes. Then the indians were convinced that Jurupari had killed the boy. His parents couldn't belive their lovely son was dead. All the indians were crying close to the body when suddenly a thunder echoed in the sky.

The indians were very afraid because the day was very beautiful and without a cloud in the sky. It was a message of Tupã for the mother of the little indian. She should plant the child's eyes. Of his eyes would sprout a miraculous plant that would bring happiness and health for all.

Althougt the mother was very very sad, she obeyed Tupã and after some days a new plant appeared at the forest. This plant was called Guaraná.

Guaraná in the language of the indians means: fruits that seem people's eyes
