Extra Credit
Here are the marking schemes for any extra credit that I will assign.  Look at the one that applies to you when doing your extra credit so you can get the best grade possible.
Recipe
Atomic or Molecular Model
Choose a dish that is unique to your culture or family.  Prepare it so everyone in class gets to taste it.  Write up the recipe in the form of a lab report.  You must include the title, materials, and procedure.  All units must be metric, all words must be translated into English, and the procedure must be extremely detailed.
Make an atomic model of any atom of your choice.  Make a molecular model of any compound of your choice.
Bridge Challenge
Make a bridge out of nothing but toothpics and white glue.  The dimensions must be length = 50cm, width = 20cm, height = 20cm.  They will be tested by how many textbooks (mass of 2kg) they can hold.  The less material you use in constructing the bridge the better because you will also be given a grade on the book mass:bridge mass ratio.
Parachute Challenge
Make a parachute, out of material of your choice, for a small toy doll.  The better the parachute, the longer it will stay in the air as it drops 1-2 stories.
Rock Collection
Story Book
Start a rock/mineral collection.  Collect as many different types of rocks/minerals, from nature, that you can find.  Do not buy your samples.  They must be unpolished and from the outdoors.  You must identify the type of rock/mineral it is and explain how you identified it.  Then think of a creative way to display your collection.  Your collection should have between 3-10 different samples.
You are to make a story book that depicts a topic chosen by the teacher.  The story must be creative, entertaining, educational, and grade level appropriate (between PK-5).  The completed project should include illustrations and look like a story book.  The book may be computer or hand generated.
Useful Websites
Letter to the Editor
Find 5 websites that are useful to your science class.  They can contain topics that we have covered, or topics that we will be covering later in the year.  You must email me a word document containing the website and an evaluation of it. Follow the rubric when doing the assignment.
You are to write a Letter to the Editor about a concern you have.  The concern can be about either Medicines and Drugs or Environmental Chemistry.  You are to present the issue, facts, your opinion, possible solutions, and hopefully convince others that this is a valid concern.
Educational Game
Useful Experiments and Demonstrations
Choose any topic in your course and create a game that can be used as a learning tool.  You may model your game after one you already know, or create something original. When designing your game, keep in mind who your audience is and that your game is to help them learn about the topic.
Find 5 experiments or demonstrations that are useful to your science class. They can be about topics that we have covered, or topics that we will be covering later in the year.  You must email me a word document containing the link of where you found the lab/demo and where it fits into our curriculum. Follow the rubric when doing the assignment.
Creative Expression of a Science Topic
Choose a topic in from the science that you are studying.  Pick one that you are interested in.  Express that topic in a creative way - write a song or poem, make a painting or sculpture, write a play or create a dance.  You must show or perform your work to the class.
