Christmas Program #1

He is Born (sung by choir)

It's such a simple story, the story of our Savior's birth. A three year old can understand it. A five year old can tell it. Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem to be taxed. While they were there Mary had a baby. The baby was Jesus, ... the Christ ... the Son of God

Away in a Manger (congregation page 206)

But the whole story isn't really so simple. It started in our pre-earth life when our Father in Heaven held a council

24 And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell;
25 And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them; . . .
27 And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first. (The Pearl of Great Price; Abraham 3:24-25, 27 )
And so we agreed to become lost to all that we had known, in order to be tested, and to have the opportunity to become as our Father, because we knew we would be rescued by our elder brother from inevitable sin and darkness.
22 For behold, God knowing all things, being from everlasting to everlasting, behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing.
23 And God also declared unto prophets, by his own mouth, that Christ should come. (The Book of Mormon; Moroni 7:22-23 )
And the Prophets delivered the news to the Father's children, that they too might know the Good News
8 And now, behold, I will testify unto you of myself that these things are true. Behold, I say unto you, that I do know that Christ shall come among the children of men, to take upon him the transgressions of his people, and that he shall atone for the sins of the world; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
9 For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and are lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement . . .(The Book of Mormon; Alma 34:8-9 )
Behold the Savior Cometh (sung by choir)

Imagine the excitement among the hosts of heaven on that Holy night. Maybe some of us were among that host being called to announce the glorious news to humble shepherds. What instructions were they given, those heavenly messengers, as they went forth to minister to those shepherds? Could the instructions have been something like these words in the song which the choir will now sing for us?

( I have left the words of the song out because it is copyrighted.)

Before the Marvel of this Night (sung by choir)

1 AND it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed...
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (The Holy Bible; Luke 2:1, 3-7 )
Sing Forth O Earth (sung by choir)

Yes, a simple story, but what power it has. Because it is true. And because it is true, the Holy Ghost carries the truth of it into the heart of the humble listener. Thus is born in the hearts of the children of men, hope and faith and the courage to face the trials of this world.

In 1994, two Americans answered an invitation from the Russian Department of Education to teach morals and ethics (based on biblical principles) in the public schools. They were invited to teach at prisons, businesses, the fire and police departments and a large orphanage. About 100 boys and girls who had been abandoned, abused, and left in the care of a government-run program were in the orphanage. They relate the following story in their own words:

It was nearing the holiday season, 1994, time for our orphans to hear, for the first time, the traditional story of Christmas. We told them about Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem. Finding no room in the inn, the couple went to a stable, where the baby Jesus was born and placed in a manger.

Throughout the story, the children and orphanage staff sat in amazement as they listened. Some sat on the edges of their stools, trying to grasp every word. Completing the story, we gave the children three small pieces of cardboard to make a crude manger. Each child was given a small paper square, cut from yellow napkins I had brought with me. No colored paper was available in the city.

Following instructions, the children tore the paper and carefully laid strips in the manger for straw. Small squares of flannel, cut from a worn-out nightgown an American lady was throwing away as she left Russia, were used for the baby's blanket. A doll-like baby was cut from tan felt we had brought from the United States.

The orphans were busy assembling their manger as I walked among them to see if they needed any help. All went well until I got to one table where little Misha sat. He looked to be about 6 years old and had finished his project. As I looked at the little boy's manger, I was startled to see not one, but two babies in the manger. Quickly, I called for the translator to ask the lad why there were two babies in the manger. Crossing his arms in front of him and looking at this completed manger scene, the child began to repeat the story very seriously. For such a young boy, who had only heard the Christmas story once, he related the happenings accurately - until he came to the part where Mary put the baby Jesus in the manger. Then Misha started to ad-lib.

He made up his own ending to the story as he said, "And when Maria laid the baby in the manger, Jesus looked at me and asked me if I had a place to stay. I told him I have no mamma and I have no papa, so I don't have any place to stay. Then Jesus told me I could stay with him. But I told him I couldn't, because I didn't have a gift to give him like everybody else did. But I wanted to stay with Jesus so much, so I thought about what I had that maybe I could use for a gift. I thought maybe if I kept him warm, that would be a good gift. So I asked Jesus, "If I keep you warm, will that be a good enough gift?" And Jesus told me, "If you keep me warm, that will be the best gift Anybody ever gave me." "So I got into the manger, and then Jesus looked at me and he told me I could stay with him---for always."

As little Misha finished his story, his eyes brimmed full of tears that trickled down his little cheeks. Putting his hand over his face, his head dropped to the table and his shoulders shook as he sobbed and sobbed. The little orphan had found someone who would never abandon nor abuse him, someone who would stay with him -for always. (A story that was sent me on the Internet. No author was given)

Angels We Have Heard on High (sung by choir)

As Christ brought us his gifts of hope and faith ... and repentance .... and forgiveness ..... and eternal life; we give gifts to each other to celebrate his life. But what of our gifts to Christ? The wise men presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. What does he ask of us?

20 And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, . . .
21 Behold, I have come unto the world to bring redemption unto the world, to save the world from sin.
22 Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life, and have taken it up again; therefore repent, and come unto me ye ends of the earth, and be saved. (The Book of Mormon; 3 Nephi 9:20-22 )
With Wondering Awe (congregation page 210)

So the whole story isn't really so simple is it? And there are so many who still don't know. Don't know of the plan, of the hope and faith ... and repentance ... and forgiveness. Don't know about eternal life.

8 Wherefore, how great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead,. . .. (The Book of Mormon; 2 Nephi 2:8 )
I Wonder as I Wander (sung by choir)

What now brothers and sisters? What power does this story have in our lives, this simple story we know so well?

14 And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?
15 Do ye exercise faith in the redemption of him who created you? Do you look forward with an eye of faith, and view this mortal body raised in immortality, and this corruption raised in incorruption... ? (The Book of Mormon; Alma 5:14-15 )

26 And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now? (The Book of Mormom: Alma 5:26 )

33 For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift. (The Doctrine and Covenants 88:33)
