QUESTION:I am the owner of a 9-month-old GSP and I also have two small children 3yrs and 5 yrs. dog behavior problems Hills prescription diet dog food. We got the pup at 8 weeks old and there has never been a problem until the past month. My dog has started snarling and growling at my children and other children for no reason that I can see. For example, today my daughter was petting him, and then all of a sudden he snarled and showed his teeth. She told me this, so I had him sit and asked her to pet him again and to my surprise he snarled at her again. I took my newspaper and spanked him and put him in his crate for 30 mins. I am not sure if what I did was correct or not (the spanking with a newspaper). I have watched your basic obedience training video and it has helped me train him. He is very smart and we have successfully gone through steps one (learning) and two (correction) with the five commands and we are now working on distraction training. However, this snarling at children was not covered and I will not allow it. He seems to respond well with the choke collar so I never purchased a pincher. Should I? Also, he seems to be a soft dog not needing much correction. What should I do? Are some dogs just not able to be around children? One more bit of information for you; the first time he snarled at my child (about a month ago) I really corrected him hard! He even wet the floor. Was that a mistake that could have made the problem worse making him really resent children? Please help, I love my dog but I will never allow him to snarl at children. Thanks,PaulaANSWER:You did the right thing a month ago. When this dog does this he needs to get corrected so hard that he fears for his life. I can not stress this enough. I would kick this dog right in the head if he even lifted his lips to a child. Pick a chair up and throw it at the dog while you scream like a crazy lady.
