| Lloyd Almighty are a kicking band in limbo... Originally founded in 1986 as 'Executive Fork' by brothers Rod & Fabian, they were joined by another brother - Andy. The chaps moved to Manchester from Helensburgh, picking up other part-time members on the way under names such as Hundred & Ten in Neutral, Mothers' Only Sons, The Starlings & Bodieguard Ain't No Baptist. Rehearsing at Rod & Andy's house in Partington and now carrying the name 'Bodieguard Ain't No Baptist', the band started more serious gigging around Manchester at places like the 'Lancaster Tavern', 'The Boardwalk' and a rousing performance while filling in for a blues band at 'Shades' in Chorlton. David Whitworth was taking turns drumming with Rod and he brought a Heavy Metal type 'trick drumming' quality to the band. Visiting 'Johnny Roadhouse, Manchester, Dave outdrummed the Drum salesman even though he was only given one stick by the rat-featured rodent boy. The band became Lloyd Almighty around 1992 - still very much a communal band, members included Martin & Paul Mulligan and Peter Vanden - all ex-'Easterhouse'. The lads combined on several occasions with Lancashire band 'the Mighty Asylum' playing mutual support slots to ensure better exposure. One particular such gig in Watersfoot, Lancs, produced a group of local lads and their girlfriends covered in baked pear, a near mass battle and a broken leg for a drunken bypasser when someone unwittingly ran him over outside the venue! Lloyd Almighty produced 'The Everywhere EP' as a trio in 1993 - unfortunately shortly before the Mulligan boys began casting an influence and to be fair, it showed in the final product. The EP portrayed none of the power or control that was brought to the band by the brothers - or that produced by then existing band members. When Fabian left the band in 1995 they were able to re-shuffle - allowing Martin & Paul to play their best instruments - Bass and Lead guitar respectively. Andy took more oftern to leaving his guitar on the stand and a new drummer - Craig Smith, from Huddersfield - joined the band, who now displayed a tightness previously unheard. (Hear Craig in his new band 'Crawfish') Andy wrote some seriously good songs and combined with Paul's arrangement & production, things looked very rosy for the band. After playing Manchester University and 'The Roadhouse' things became strangely quiet then. Andy was in full time education at Bangor University and things petered out just when they were starting to look good. Whatever happens now, it will be a great shame if songs like 'Diary', 'BUYC' (in it's latest and most thrilling guise), 'Solo' and the re-vamped 'Kicked' go unheard by anyone outside the band.
