The �very special episode� card could not stop the fledgling FOX network breaking the ABC/CBS/NBC iron monopoly. An emerging beat from the street called �rap music� burst into the mainstream. At the cinema, ET mystified�Freddy Krueger gave teenagers a reason to drink coffee at night�while Alex P. Keaton took everyone back to the future. New Coke proved to be the marketing goof of the millennium, the AIDS epidemic made the sexual revolution of the decade past seem surreal, and people couldn�t get enough of the catch phrases �I pity the fool�� and �Where's the beef?!�

In Llanview, Viki�s mourning of the loss of Joe Riley was cushioned by the presence of Clint Buchanan. The chaotic quad of Cord Roberts, Tina Lord, Max Holden, and Gabrielle Medina gave the old adage �love in the afternoon� a new �80s flair. Two very high profile baby switching�s made headlines.
