In preparation of her wedding to Larry, Karen wanted it to be the biggest, most lavish affair that Llanview had ever seen. Her plans went smoothly until a week before the wedding ceremony when Marco Dane arrived in Llanview. Karen was mortified to see Marco. In addition to his having once been her lover, he also knew Karen�s history�which involved her involvement in an embezzlement scheme, and spending six months on probation. If Larry found out about her past, Karen feared he would never agree to marry her. Despite Karen�s being unnerved by Marco�s presence, she and Larry tied the knot, while Marco remained silent about Karen�s secrets�for the time being.

After their short-lived honeymoon, Karen quickly became bored with life as a housewife. Despite Larry�s urging, Karen resisted tempering her profligate ways. One afternoon, while in a local boutique, Karen tried on an expensive dress that she obviously could not afford on the budget Larry had given her. As she fawned over the outfit, an older and wealthy gentleman stood in the background admiring her. He was Talbot Huddleston, a pillar of the community.

Huddleston presented Karen with a tantalizing offer: he would buy her the dress, if she agreed to have lunch with him. Karen accepted, but their rendezvous included more than just lunch. After a meal and a few glasses of wine, Karen returned to Huddleston�s hotel room where they made love. Before long, Karen was indulging her champagne tastes by having sex with a variety men, in exchange for extravagant gifts of jewelry and clothing.
