Pegasus was born from Medusa, one of the gorgon sisters. His father was the sea god Poseidon. Medusa was pregnant when Poseidon visited her in the form of a stallion. The unfortunate way Pegasus was born was by Perseus decapitating Medusa because she couldn't give birth when she became the monster. A white stalllion with a silky mane and golden wings, with breath that smells like wild flowers.
He was a lunar animal and had the ability to make a fountain of water to gush out wherever he stamped his hoof on. Water is the interpretation of Pegasus's name.
One hero who needed the help of Pegasus was Belleraphon who had recieved the quest to kill Chimera. Belleraphon used a golden bridle given to him by Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. He managed to put the bridle on Pegasus's head when he was drinking at Peirene. The bridle made Pegasus tame and obedient.
Because Pegasus was so much more agile compared to the monster, Belleraphon was able to kill the evil beast. The hero felt that he should claim a place of the gods because of his success so he rode Pegasus to Olympia. But soon to find out that Zeus was furious at him and so then he stung Pegasus and Belleraphon went flying out.
Pegasus is told to carry dead Roman empires to the Land of the Dead and therefore, pictures of him are found by many tombstones of Romans. The combination of higher and lower natures and of striving to achieve the higher is the symbolism of the winged horse. |
