Hinking in Almería is a great experiance. There is so much to see on the many walks that you can have in so many different mountain ranges. There has been organised well indicated routes to follow, throughout Spain.
The FEDME ( la Federación Española de Deportes de Montaña y Escalada ) is promoting the sport of hinking a relative new outdoor sport for Spain.
Over 15.000 Km of signposted routes have been set out, and the number is increasing. That may not seem like a lot, for a country as big as Spain is. Ofcourse there are many routes to organise, other than the signposted ones.
Signposting has been organised under three different levels of distance:
o Hiking Long Distance ( SGR ); a distance of more than 50 Km.
o Hiking Small Distance ( SPR ); a distance between 10 and 50 Km.
o Hiking Locally ( SL ) ; a distance less than 10 Km.
Some great books have been written about hiking routes in Almería and the Alpujarra Mountain range ( Almería and Granada )
A good walk is the one that takes you to the top of the highest mountain on the Iberian Peninsula: The Muley Hacen in the Sierra Nevada, 3.479m above sea-level.
I like to set out early in the morning to take a walkway I haven´t used before and spend the whole day enjoying whatever I come across. I don´t usually use the signposted routes, but just get out and make up my mind as the walk goes on.
Almería is great for hiking ! Over 30% of the area is above the 1.000m above sea-level, it has a hot dessert, big forrests, snow-topped mountains, good beaches, eight protected areas as nature reserves....many reasons to come and enjoy the area by having long walks in Almería.
