Chapter 4
The next evening Ellen and Jayis tested the spells that had cast.  They first tried to get into her power source by using limited amounts of power.  They asked Rianna to stop them if she sensed their presence.  The sensations the spells gave her took some getting used to.  The first try she did not know what to so as she had never felt someone try to attain entrance to her magic without her feeling it and allowing them to do so.  That was the major reasons for the spells though and she at least it was working.  Secondly, Riannas magic began to avoid being touched by other magics.  Whenever Jayis or Ellen reached out with their power to touch hers, Riannas magic recoiled.  On the next try Rianna was ready for the new sensations and easily stopped Jayis and Ellen from getting hold in her power source.  Basically all she had to do was push back against them.  If she pushed them back all the way to their own magics they would stop and increase their power level they were testing her with.  After a while of this they reached a point where Rianna could not push back against them.  They were both using power levels a fair bit stronger than her own.

Well I would say those spells were a success.  You can sense what anyone with normal magical defenses could maybe even a little better, Hmmm I think I have a way to test that, actually.  Jayis mused out loud.  Rianna tell me when you stop sensing my magics presence.

Once again Rianna felt Jayis magic try to touch hers.  This time though, her started at the power level they had stopped at and Rianna couldnt push him out.  He continued to raise his power level but Rianna could still sense his power.  This continued for several minutes and Continued to pour more magic into his effort to fool Rianna.  She had never sensed so much power from someone else before.  Eventually the power Jayis through at her leveled off.

You can still sense that? he asked.

Rianna nodded.

Jayis ceased his effort and turned to Ellen.

Those spells are better than normal magic defenses.  She could sense my magic full power when I threw it at her.  Of course I was not trying to mask it but you know as well as I do that after a certain point if someone elses power is so much greater than yours you cant sense their presence.  Those spells told her that I was there even a my peak.

By this time Rianna was getting worn out.  She was still not all that used to her magic and testing it was tiresome.  Jayis and Ellen were not tired at all mostly since they were massively experienced with their magic and they were eager to see how their spells were going to hold up.  These tests had actually taken a great deal of time as it was getting rather late but Jayis was thinking up new ways to test the defensive spells every minute and discussing them with Ellen.  They were not really paying attention to her while they were discussing farther tests and when Rianna wasnt trying to fight them off she was completely confused to the point of boredom listening to them.  Fortunately it was a pleasant evening to they had gone outside into one of the many palace gardens while they examined the strengths of the spells.

At least the breeze is keeping me awake, Rianna thought, as Jayis and Ellen began discussing yet another thing they had to analyze.  At this rate this is going to take all night.  I dont know if I can stay awake that long even with the breeze.  Rianna wandered over the short distance to the fountain in the middle of the garden.  At least the sound of the falling water was easier to listen to than her teachers conversation.  She still was not used to the idea of magic.  She used her magic to create a small ball of water and drew from the pool.  She lifted it high in the air and willed it to move around, left and right, up and down.  Rianna continued her train of thought as she played with her water ball.  Magic was the stuff of dreams and fantasy and it was a difficult concept to bring into real life.  Not only that but she was expected to take over Azaran at some point, and Rianna had no idea how to govern anything, let alone this strange new world she had been thrown into.  She sensed there was still much more she had to learn about the Worlds and especially the Dark Worlds.  She could tell there was something people were not telling her, but at right now she had far to many things to deal with.  She lost control of the water ball she had created and it fell back into the pool getting her wet.  Like my magic, Rianna thought with a sigh.

Jayis and Ellen were to involved in their conversation to notice the sound of the water dropping back into the pool, although the sound of the fountain drowned it out some.

Jayis and Ellen continued their conversation for some hours until it got dark.  Rianna spent most of the time by the fountain, thinking about the current changes to her life.  Eventually they came over and apologized for keeping her so long.  They had figured they would check some other things that night but it was too late now.  Jayis said good night to them both and went inside.  Ellen sat down on the fountain edge beside Rianna and looked up into the deepening evening sky.  The first stars were out and there were no clouds to block their light.

Rianna, I am truly sorry for getting that involved in a conversation.  We forget that you dont know what we are talking about, since such great things are expected from you.   It must be strange for you, discovering this magic and learning you are destined for something you had no idea existed a few weeks ago.  Ellen sighed and continued to look at the stars for a moment, then shifted her gaze to Rianna, who was also looking into the quickly darkening sky.

I never knew anything but magic.  I was born with it, and I met Jayis when I was in school, my second year and his twelfth.  He knew he was going to be King and was taking the courses to get the traditional five masters.  He actually has seven although he rarely admits it.  I didnt know what I was doing but when he realized I was one of his Council I really didnt have much of a choice, not that it mattered.  It much be so much different for you.  Ellen went back to gazing at the sky.

Rianna truly appreciated Ellens acknowledgement of how different it was for her.  Yeah, its really strange.  I guess you knew all this type of stuff when you met Jayis.  I just feels strange.  I know Im expected to know all these things but I have to learn them all so quickly.  I dont know if I can.  You know more about who Im supposed to be than I do.

When your more used to magic you can take those history courses Jayis suggested a while ago.  After that, well go over all the Prophecies that cant be covered in that course.  Ellen smiled.  Most of them have been kept secret for you.  There are even some we cant read.  Each King of Queen has their own private set of Prophecies.  In some specific cases Council members have had Prophecies too.  Some of you Council will.  You can worry about those later though, there are many things to do first and they are not going anywhere.  Why dont I take you home? We have more work to do tomorrow, but we wont have any more of those conversations, just stop us if we start one.
