CHUPPAH Halachah (Jewish religious law) requires Jewish weddings to take place under a chuppah, the wedding canopy. It should be a temporary, handmade structure, open on four sides. The chuppah embodies many symbols of Judaism. It reminds us of the tents of our nomadic ancestors. It also represents the divine lightjust as the chuppah covers the couple, so too this light surrounds all of creation. It is the light of wisdom and the root of all existence. With its open sides, the chuppah recalls the tent of Abraham, open to all and welcoming in its hospitality. The chuppah also symbolizes the first home shared by Leslie and Dov as a married couple. Our chuppah was made of pieces of material designed by friends and family members, and sewn together by our wonderful friend, Ellie Klein. |
