How to install Delphi skyfixm radio in Volvo S70 with the FM modulator
Parts needed:
Thin sheet metal to fabricate mount and base for antenna
Short screws to attach metal mount to dash
Splice kit to do inline taps to the power and ground lines.
Tools needed:
Torx 25 screw driver
Hacksaw
Drill with appropriate bits for the screws you choose to use
Screwdriver for the screws you choose to use
Total time:
Total time should be less than one hour. I ended up taking 3 hours but I had to stop several times, put the car back together to drive off to the store for parts, and figure out where the best place for the installation was and how to route cables, etc.
This installation if very clean and should you wish to remove it later, you?ll never know it was there since all the holes and such are made to parts of the dash that are well hidden.
Install the antenna on the dash. imageI chose to mount a small metal square to the dash and use the magnet to keep the antenna in place. The antenna is right up against the glass so this lets me remove the antenna to clean the glass and to access the inspection stickers. Route the cable along the seam to the driver's or passenger's side. If on the driver's side, as I did, route the cable down along the door seam. Remove the lower bolster and route the cable along the metal pipe to the center console.
Remove the radio by pushing the tabs in and pulling the unit out. Don't unplug the cables, just set the radio to the side. Remove the temperature controls by grabbing the rear of the unit through the stereo hole. Wiggle the unit up and down until it pops out. imageRemove the two green connectors from the back of the temperature control unit. Set the temperature controls aside. Reach through the hole where the radio was and grab the end of the antenna and pull it through.
Open the glove box and remove the 6 torx 25 screws. Pull hard and remove the box. Pull the excess antenna cable through and bundle near the base of the glove box door.
Install one splice to the black ground cable in the large connector going to the back of the radio. Install the other splice to the ACC+ cable. Crimp the blade connectors from the splice kit to the red and black wires on the FM modulator. Plug in the FM modulator's power cables to the splice taps on the connector to the radio. Remove the antenna cable from the back of the radio and install the FM modulator's antenna plug in the radio. Plug the car's antenna plug to the FM modulator's socket. image
In the space where the glove box was, you'll see a metal bar where the glove box rests. image Install the FM modulator with double sided tape and wire ties to the underside of this metal bar. Bunch up excess cables and tie to the bottom of the bar as well.image
Now you'll have to route the power, line out and antenna cables from near the glove box area where you mounted the modulator to the outside to connect to the skyfi unit. To do this you will have to remove the ash tray and its mounting bracket. Just pull hard and the ash tray will come out. Then remove the bracket. You?ll have to notch the bracket and the corresponding area on the dash. imageimageI cut a small 1/4 inch notch to route the cables. Route the three cables down from the glove box area through the notch. This notch is at the back of the dash under the ashtray so it is not visible. If you remove the unit you?ll never know there?s a hole there unless you put your head down by the gear shifter and look hard.
Now you'll have to fabricate and install the metal mount. The mount is about 4.5x1 inches total length with a bend about 1 inch from one end.  imageimageOn the short end you will have to drill two small holes. Align the mount in the opening for the temperature controls and mark where the two holes are. Drill the marks and install the metal mount so that it is as flush as possible.  imageInstall the car kit to the end of the metal mount.
Reinstall the plugs on the back of the temperature controls and push it back in. Reinstall the radio. Make sure there is enough slack in the cables to reach the cradle and reinstall the ash tray mount and ashtray. Reinstall the box to the glove box. Clean up the cables by wrapping them in tape or some other cover.image
Plug everything up, turn on the car and check that everything works.
That's all.
