The first riverside establishment you'll meet in Old Town, Zlata Ribica has finally cashed in on its prestigious location after long years as one of the proud few pre-capitalist relics on the local bar scene. The interior's been refurbished, the windows frosted, and they've added an extensive menu of Slovenian and Italian fare. There is pleasant outdoor seating in warmer weather, both alongside the river and in a small, shady square. Sitting out front offers one of the best views in town with the Triple Bridge and peachy Franciscan Church to the right and the willowy bank of the Ljubljanica to the left.

Inside is a cozy spot to linger over a bowl of homemade soup and wait out a spring shower. The new menu for summer is now available packed with fresh ingredients. Try the tuna-topped salad (tunina v solati) or the green salad with apples (zelenjavna solata z jabolki). These make tasty light meals on their own. The hearty homemade soups are also favorites here: a big bowl of pašta fižol for 600 sit. There are loads of vegetarian choices including gnocchi with arugula or mushrooms (njoki z rukolo, njoki z jurčki). On the meatier side, the grilled lamb (jagenjček na žaru) and game goulash (divjačinski golaž) come highly recommended. Zlata Ribica is a versatile spot: perfect for a fresh and filling meal or a cold beer on a warm evening.
