5 years on and still asking myself, oh why, oh why?

(11 oddities that I have still not worked out – can anybody help?)

  1. Why are prices in shops still marked as 173.27 SIT? Can’t the price be rounded up or down?
  2. Why are 1 Tolar coins still used? The value of the coin is 0.003 GBP or 0.004 USD or 0.3 of a penny or 0.4 of a cent! They serve no use apart from blocking up my washing machine and falling all over the floor when I take my trousers off!
  3. Why is the Ljubljana Bus route map the most complex and incomprehensible map I have tried to figure out? Can anyone actually logically explain to me how to get from A to B using the map without going in the complete opposite direction?
  4. Why is it a legal requirement to drive with dipped headlights on in broad daylight? Can you not see my car from 500 meters away without my lights on sunshine? Have you ever wandered why so many cars in Slovenia have dodgy and faulty headlights?
  5. Why are zebra crossing’s placed immediately at right angles to junctions both of main roads and minor roads causing vehicles to stop dead on a main road in order let a little old lady cross the road? Why not put them 3-5 meters back to allow vehicles to get off the main road and lessen the possibilities of giving grannies heart attacks.
  6. Why do some of the major supermarkets (I shall mention no names – Interšpar) still not accept major credit cards and to date do not offer cash tills for 10 articles or less? Pure raving madness! If the answer to the credit card issue is that credit card companies charge 3% commission, then increase the prices by 3% or absorb that cost. Do you think that people will notice that a pot of yogurt has gone up from 79 SIT to 81 SIT? Doubt it!
  7. Why do waiters in bars and restaurants assume that when you say a casual "thanks" when paying the bill that they can keep the change? Very embarrassing asking for your changes back when he thinks he can keep the 2500 SIT tip!
  8. Why are locally produced canned vegetable, especially sweet corn and red kidney beans 2 to 3 times the price of imported canned produce? Should it not be the other way round?
  9. Why will shops and supermarkets not take back the green Union beer bottles (0.66 l and 0.3 l) for a small refund but will accept the 0.5 l red bottles?
  10. Why do foreigners have to drive around with bright green "snot" coloured number plates, labeling them as funny little green aliens from the distant planet Zogvenia?
  11. Where does all the milk and meat in Slovenia come from? In my 5 years of traveling in and around Slovenia, I have counted 33 cows, 6 sheep, 2 lambs and 0 pigs. Are the 33 cows milked 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? It does however explain the fact why you cannot order lamb in Slovenia though!

Just a few thoughts to ponder. Any logical and serious replies would be well received.

By the way, when choosing a pizza, I recommend choosing the one with "brez gob", best to be safe than sorry. Also, when you fancy some fish for main course, I would avoid choosing the "Krap". You will be in fact served up a lovely piece of juicy and steamy "Krap" I leave that one for you to look up and think about.
