60. Dennis Wilson WINN

HISTORY of DENNIS WILSON WINN

Dennis Wilson Winn, a son of Minor Winn Jr. and Nancy Wilson. Joining the
church they came to Nauvoo to be with the main body of the Saints. Dennis was
baptized by Elder James B. Hamilton in Adams Co. Ill. in 1839.
The Saints were forced to leave Nauvoo in Feb. 1846. They made camp on
Sugar Creek at which time Brigham Young held a council meeting. It was at this
place that a temporary organization of the company was effected. It comprised
?00 wagons all heavy loaded with less than half enough teams necessary to make
the journey. The camp of Israel was now organized and a petition sent to the

governor of the State of Iowa, for protection while traveling through the

State. Travel was slow but from day to day the caravan wearily crossed the snow
covered Iowa at various points between Mississippi and Missouri. The Mormans
built temporary settlements breaking the land and putting in crops for the
benefit of those who were to follow. Early in 1846 Pres. Young wrote to Jesse
Little who was then the H.H. and called him on a mission to Washington D.C.
asking any facilities for migration to the Western coast, which the goverment
might offer. But by the time Mr. Little reached Washington the Mexican War was
causing excitement. Mr. Little reported that he talked with Amor Kendell who
thru arrangements could be made to assist the Mormon immigration by enlisting
some of the Morman men, establishing them in California to defend the country.
Elder Little talked with the President of the United States, who received him
kindly, stating that he believed the Mormans to be loyal americans. It was at
this time that Col. Thomas L. Kane took up the cause of the Mormans. Knowing
them to be brave sould, enduring more than should be asked of any people. The
first plan was that a battalion of 1,000 men be raised. Then came the call for
only 500 men.
It was on Wed. 1st of July, at Council Bluff, Iowas, that President Young
introduced Captain James Allen, of the U.S. Army, to the people who had
gathered to hear his message. Captain Allen addressed the people and told them
that thru the benevolence of the President of the United States an order had
been made to enlist men to take part in the war against Mexico.
President Young said that this would help them get to the valley easier as
the Soldier pay would help the pioneers to the valley. He said this was the
best offer ever made by the government to benefit us. I will do my best to see
all their families brought forward so far as my influence can be extended and
feed them when I haven't anything to eat myself. On the 21st of July they
started on the march to the tune of "The Girl I Left Behind Me", Dennis and his
father Minor were in Co. A, under Caption Jefferson Hunt. President Young said
if we want the privalage of going where we can Worship God according to the
dictates of our own conscience we must raise the battallion. I say it is right
and who cares for sacrificing our comforts for a few years. I would rather have
undertaken to raise 2,000 a year ago in 24 hrs. than 100 in a week from now.
Dennis was released the middle of July 1847, came back to Salt Lake. Married
Margaret Bateman, 2 Jan 1849 who then living in Nauvoo lived across from the
Prophet Joseph Smith home. Dennis was sent by President Young to help Geo. A
Smith settle Iron Co. Then was again sent to help settle Presiton, Idaho in
1860, which was still a vast wilderness known only to a few trappers, the
hunters, the prospectors and the catholic Missionaries. The extent of its
wealth and resources were unthought of.
Savage Indians and others made the Saints travels along the streams,
across the plains and thru the mountain passes more of a hardship. Just at this
time a small band of pioneers blazed their way into the northern part of Cache
Valley. It was thru the direction of President Young sending men and their
families to different parts of the territory, settling it for places to build
homes. Having heard of the rich fertile soil. Among the first settlers were
Dennis Wilson Winn, his brother John, sons of Minor Winn Jr. and Nancy Wilson.
They were born in Madison Co. Alabama, leaving their homes to follow the
leaders of their new found religion. James Nephi Winn and brother John, sons of
Dennis Wilson Winn, helped also to settle this vast land. They dug ditches,
canals and planted fruit trees and berry bushes.
It was early in 1879 that a school was built. Dennis built his home in May
1868, a fram building-32X16 ft. The first white child to be born in Preston was
Jessie Winn, daughter of Dennis Winn and Margaret Bateman. She was born in 1869
and died 1872, buried at Richmond, Utah.
Among the first married was James Nephi Winn, son of Dennis wilson Winn,
to Angeline Thomas, daughter of Preston thomas and Maryann Jane Morehead, the
25th of September 1875, at Richmond, Utah (My great-great grandparents) Their
home before marriage was at Preston. The first stove in Preston was owned and
Opp. by Dennis Winn at his home. The business was conducted in the part of his
home known as the North lean to. This was in 1874, he carried supplies for
freighters, small impliments and groceries. He conducted this store for 5
years. The building location was about 2 1/2 miles Southeast of Preston.
In May of 1823, Dennis and sons, James Nephi and John, were sent to help
settle Ashley Valley, Uintah, Utah. His wife outlived him 6 years. They are
both buried in Vernal City Cemetary.
