Course Description:
English 10 Advanced is a literature-based Language Arts course, which integrates the complex nature of language acquisition and the multiple elements of language arts in a comprehensive program of thinking, listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. The interdisciplinary program is meaning-centered and skill-based and is designed to develop students as readers, writers and analytical thinkers. One of the major aspects of this course is for students to understand the interconnectedness that lies among literature, history and culture. By analyzing historical pieces of texts, students will inevitably have a greater understanding of a historical period.
Assignments:
During the year students will be asked to complete a multitude of assignments that will aide in their understanding of poetry and literature. Such assignments will include in-class-timed essays, process pieces, post essays, poetry analysis, vocabulary, and MUGS. Alongside the reading and daily assignment component of the class, students are required to complete the following essays: Response to Literature Essay, Revision of an Essay, Analytical Essay, Business Letter and Research Report. These writing types will taught throughout the year and will be expected to be displayed in a year-end portfolio.
Students will be required to read a number of fiction and nonfiction pieces that range from fictional short stories, plays, and analytical essays. Works to be examined, but not excluding other works, will be Julius Caesar William Shakespeare, Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmund Rosetand, Antigone by Sophocles, Color of Water by James McBride, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and Picture Bride by Yoshiko Uchida. Students will be asked to analyze the literary elements in the text by comparing the similar themes across genres.

what assignments were assigned. Assignments given in advance are not allowed to
be late, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian note explaining the reason

Citizenship and Class

Because of the nature of this class, discipline will simply not be a problem. Please realize that it is honor to be a part of this interdisciplinary program, not a right. An effective and engaging learning environment can only be successful when there is mutual respect and cooperation. The three simple rules for this classroom are Be Respectful at all times, Listen the FIRST time and Be Prepared. More importantly, you have an excellent opportunity and have worked very hard in order to qualify for this class. We are going to have a splendid time working together. Please refer to citizenship policy on back.
Absences:
Daily attendance is vital to the academic success of a student. In accordance with Eastlake High School Attendance policy, each tardy will result in a drop in a student’s citizenship grade and an automatic detention.
Therefore if a student has five or more tardies per quarter, his or her citizenship will be no higher than an F. In the unlikely event that a student receives more than one unexcused absence or truancy, his or her citizenship will be an F for the quarter.
