Paper cutting is an ancient form of folk art, and has been practiced by millions of men, women, and children, throughout the world. Many people in the United States are not familiar with paper cutting, even though it has been practiced in America since the late 17th century. Scherenschnitte was brought to America by German and Swiss immigrants, who settled in Pennsylvania. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is still the center of paper cutting in America today.
Learning to cut paper is easy. No special talent is required. Even a child can produce beautiful work. Very simple motifs, such as hearts, tulips, and birds, are lovely, easy to cut, and can be done in a short time. If you are a beginner, choose a few simple patterns first. After that, don't be afraid to try more difficult patterns. The material and tools you will need are inexpensive and easy to acquire. A pair of scissors, and a pattern on suitable paper is all you need to begin.
