Are you hot to trot? |
O.k, so you've been riding a couple of weeks, and you're really starting to get the hang of this riding lark. You feel a bit more confident, and that you're not going to fall off every time you turn a corner, but whats this, your now being asked to trot.
Now things are getting really uncomfortable. It feels like your insides are being shaken about and your getting double vision. So how can you improve on this awful situation, feel in control, and let your poor old bottom recover from the pounding it has taken from being bounced around. |

What is trotting? |

Well, you might have gathered thats it a wee bit quicker than walking, and you've probably realised that its a lot bumpier too. Its what we call a two time pace. That means the pony moves two of his legs at the same time. For instance he will move his front left(nearside) and his back right(offside) together. Got the idea so far? Great, lets move on to the best trot for you and your horse - rising |

Rising Trot |

Believe it or not this is the most comfortable for you and your pony. It may not feel like it now, but once you get the hang of it, it will! |

Once you become familiar with the one, two rhythm. Try the following: |
Replace your one, two counting with up down, up down. As you say up push your hips forward towards your hands. Try doing this standing on the floor to start with |

As you say down try to land in the saddle gently, I know this can be difficult sometimes |

Don't forget to hold onto your saddle or neckstrap to help you get your rhythm. As you gain confidence you can let go of your saddle or neckstrap |
Try to keep your lower leg under you, and not let it push forward when you rise, as this will make it more difficult to maintain a rhythm |

Once you can do this you will have mastered the art of the rising trot
Good Luck |
