The Story of Bubba Jesus
I wrote this story in an e-mail to a friend of mine after a college ministry service.  Please don't be offended...I'm not trying to re-write the Bible or anything.  My goal is to make the Bible more approachable for people I love that aren't as academically focused as I tend to be.  Enjoy!
This has been an incredible weeke for me.  I've gone from being totally terrified about not knowing what life holds for me or where I'm going to not only having peace in that not knowing, I'm actually finding joy in it.  And the complacencey I'd developed over the past few weeks/months was completely shattered tonight.  The fun part is that's a good thing.  I asked, and oh boy did I get it.  And I'm so excited.  I know I'm porbably not making much sense, I'm just really happy and confused and excited and afraid and all kinds of other things.
So anyway, it's story time now.  (Please forgive my interpretation...hehehe).  Once upon a time there was this dude named Peter.  And Peter was a hottie...okay, I sorta made that part up.  Joseph was a hottie, but that's another book and another story all together.  Anyway, Peter was hanging out with his homies on a little boat.  It's the middle of the night, and their little pleasure cruise gets interrupted by a nasty storm.  It's really icky weather at this point, and it's all Peter and his homies can do to keep their little boat a-floating.  So, in the middle of being all freaked out by the waves and trying not to drown, they see something out in the water.  It's late...we're talking some time between 3 and 5 am, and these guys have been up all night trying not to drown, and now there's this random apparition that looks like it's walking on the water.  What's more, it's coming towards them.  As if they hadn't already had enought trauma for one night!  Anyway, they think it's a ghost, but it decides to straighten them out.  "Hey y'all, it's just me!"  He cries out.  (Okay, so Jesus wasn't exactly hick, but I called Joseph a hottie, so at this point I think I can get away with just about anything.)  So Peter, being the cool guy that he was, said, "Dude!  Where's your boat?"  Okay, that was just bad.  Really, he said, "Aight.  If you really are Bubba (Jesus was from south Nazareth according to Fatima), then let me come on out and walk with you."  So Jesus said, "Aight.  Bring yo'self on."  So big, bad, brave Peter climbs out of the little boat.  Maybe he wasn't so brave, but he wanted to be close to Jesus and trusted Him so much that he was oblivious to the storm.  So walk on the water Peter did.  And things were just fine and dandy until Peter realized that it was storming.  When Peter shifted his focus from Jesus to the storm, that's when things went downhill and he started to sink.  When Peter realized he was sinking, ya know what he did?  He asked Jesus to help him.  And Jesus was Peter's friend, so He helped him.  All Peter had to do to survive the storm and even the feat of walking on water (when was the last time you tried that?) was to trust Jesus.  Peter did screw up and quit trusting Jesus for a second, but he realized pretty quick that wasn't a real bright thing to do, so he asked Jesus for help.
Anyway, like I said, please forgive my retelling.  It's special to say the least, but I think it makes the point I'm trying to make, which is that if we focus on God, we can do anything.  Look at Peter..he walked on water in the middle of a hu-normous storm.  I wouldn't advise trying that, but the point I'm trying to make is that by trusting in God and trying to get closer to Him, Peter did something that seemed impossible.  The weather gets nasty sometimes, but we just have to look to Jesus and and not the waves.  I'm having one of those nights where everything ins really complicated and really simple all at the same time, and if I keep rambling, it's just going to be more confusing for both of us.  I'm praying for you and I love you!
Love always,
Lindsay
