  | Hi, I had such a great time with Ms. Jacoby and her second graders, I thought I'd create my own weblog ~ blog ~ of my time at Peirce School in Arlington, Massachusetts. I hope you enjoy it! GBM (The Gingerbread Man) |
December 10, 2002 ~ I arrived at Bishop School in Arlington, Massachusetts. I know, I was a bit confused myself, but Ms. Jacoby's husband, Mr. Carme, is the principal at Bishop. She had me delivered there because Peirce School, where she teaches, is in the middle of moving to their newly built school and she didn't want me to get lost. Mr. Carme quickly whisked me off to her and her boys and girls.
Of course, when I arrived at Peirce, Ms. Jacoby and the kids were all excited about their upcoming trip to the Boston Ballet's Nutcracker.
December 11, 2002 ~ In preparation for the trip the class made sugarplums. Tchaikovsky's beautiful music for this ballet filled the classroom as we worked. Even though gingerbread is my favorite, I really loved the sugarplums. They were so sweet and delicious! I also got to meet and greet some of the nutcrackers and other characters Ms. Jacoby and the children had brought into the classroom.
You can learn more about the sugarplums, get the recipe, and see some of my new friends on Ms. Jacoby's Gingerbread Man Project page.
December 12, 2002 ~ Finally the day had arrived!!! We had been very worried about forecasts of inclement weather, including lots of snow. We all had our fingers crossed that there would NOT be a snow day!! Fortunately, it was only rain and we would soon be on our way. The boys and girls looked so elegant all dressed in their best!
Before we were off, we had Library where Ms. Paradis, the librarian, read one of my favorites - The Gingerbread Baby. |

 | The bus was a half hour late!!! We were concerned that we'd not be able to have lunch at City Place, a lovely spot in Boston, but all worked out. We enjoyed our lunch and headed over to the theater.
The Wang Theatre is gorgeous! It looks like a palace!! It's filled with marble and crystal chandeliers. |
The stage was set for a spectacular performance. In the wings were the actors dressed in the style of the 1800"s. They would be part of the introduction. I was held by several of them, but the theater was so dark, Ms. Jacoby's digital camera couldn't take my picture. :-(
At Intermission we took a stretch and I enjoyed relaxing in one of the many beautiful trees that decorate the theater.
Then it was time for Act II. I was so excited when Mother Ginger came on stage with all her little bonbons under her skirt, that I fell on the floor! Fortunately, I didn't hurt myself, and Ms. Jacoby told me that I had to calm down. |

Here I am with Sonia's menorah and some of the dreidels. | December 13, 2002 ~ Ms. Jacoby's classroom is sure looking different! There are boxes everywhere - all the boxes will be moved tomorrow. The boys and girls will stay in this empty room next week, while Ms. Jacoby works after school to unpack their materials at their new school.
To try to cheer everyone up, Ben's and Sonia's moms come in to explain their special December tradition ~ Chanukah! They brought stories, menorahs, dreidels, crafts, and cookies!! What fun!! |
December 14, 2002 ~ I had said "Goodbye" to the boys and girls in Ms. Jacoby's class and I thought I'd be on my way, but I was in for a big surprise!
Ms. Jacoby's and Mr. Carme's niece was dancing in another production of the Nutcracker! This one was in the western part of Massachusetts. It was a long drive, but the performance was wonderful! I even managed to stay in my seat when Mother Ginger came on stage!
Alicia, their niece, had danced as a soldier and a horse in the ballet. When we went backstage she had already changed out of her costume, but we did manage to snap a photo with her in her make-up. |
Here I am with Alicia backstage. |
December 15, 2002 ~ I've had a fantastic time in Massachusetts, but now it really is time to run along. I'll be hopping into my yellow "suitcase" today, and traveling on to Mrs. Elliott's second grade in Maine. I wonder what adventures will await me there!
Bye, Ms. Jacoby and girls and boys ~ I'll miss you! Maybe I can visit you next year in your NEW school!
