Daffodil Haiku

Daffodil Day is a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society
with which our school has been involved for over 16 years.
It is very special to me because it began in my classroom,
then spread throughout our school and then our town.
Always held during the first week of Spring, it helps us
welcome this wonderful season while helping others.
Daffodil Day is a day filled with delight at Peirce School -
a day that inspires us to be poetic!

We began our work with a sharing of
William Wordsworth's lovely poem about daffodils.
There were many challenging vocabulary words to explore.
We also acted out the poem.
This helped us prepare for our next task - writing haiku poetry.
We discussed the haiku with its 5-7-5 syllabic format.
We then examined one I had written and
brainstormed lists of words we could use in our poems.
Below you will find the children's wonderful work.
Please enjoy!

The Daffodils - background on Wordsworth's poem

The Daffodils
by William Wordsworth (1770-1850)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company
I gazed, and gazed, but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought;

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Our Daffodil Haiku

daffodils, flowers of hope,
bring joy to people.
