The Paul Friere perspective might be useful in the study of humanities simply because it pertains people, opening themselves up to a new way of thinking a new consciousness which allows not only personal empowerment through collective empowerment; bringing about change on a larger scale. The Liberatory style of education as suggested by Frier enables the student to engage their minds by creating our own understanding of greater social issues. By doing this we can better analyze data, weed through misleading information so readily available to us via the internet and unreliable magazines to finally come up with the realizations that will help us change the society that keeps us down, and doesnt allow us to succeed. This past summer I took SPCH 9 otherwise known as critical thinking online, in this particular class I can see how, unbeknownst to me, I used this method of consciousness and reasoning and debate. We were given a topic to research and debate, told that we should be prepared to defend our side. While I already had preconceived ideals and opinions about the topics I would soon discover through my research and online debates that my ideas of what was were centered on what I had been told or fed through the biased media. Through that class I opened myself to a new sort of consciousness where I was able create my own understanding of the issues to contribute valid ideas and resolutions during class. By utilizing Frieres techniques in this class we should be able to gain a much deeper and collective meaning to our world issues. |
