The first of many websites that will be viewed by this class, so it is my intention to make my websites as interesting and entertaining as possible. I hope you all enjoy my first ever webpage.

Here are a few definitions to get us all thinking like...humanitarians? No No...like college students who are embarking on a course that will enlighten and inspire broader thinking and realizations.

Un...(Today's Language of choice is FRENCH! Mais Oui)
HUMANITIES: And according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary humanities pretains to the branches of learning that investigate human constructs and concerns oppose to natural processes and social relations...so basically, what our cerebral cortex allows us, philosophy, arts, and language; that which makes us human.

Deux...that's right my friends number two...
HISTORY: this is a branch of knowledge that records and explains past events. Well, isn't that a nice way of suming up all that frustration we felt during our lower educational years of "remember this date, it'll be on the test!" But truly, history helps future generations, like ours, to remember the horrors of the past so that we may learn from it and hopefully not follow the foot steps of our then not so enlightened predescors. So...it's gooooooooooood!

Trois...I know you're liking the Francais ;)
ART: There is much controversey surrounding the meaning of the word art. Many claim that art is "in the eye of the beholder," which it is to many. Art is the conscious use of skill and creative imagination when creating something of asthetic value. Art is what you make it to be. I think myself to be an artist, therefore I am. I use my mind to conjure up ideas for new designs and images...I create art...woohoo go me, it's ma birf-daaaaaay...excuse me

moving on...

Quatre...oui, more French for ya' mind...
LITERATURE: a body of written works produced in a certain language, country or age...my goodness Merriam-Webster is boring and rather blunt. Literature is an expression of ones mind, imagination, soul, and life experiences on paper! Much more than "a body of written works." ...ya! so there!

Cinq...huh huh huh (that's my best attempt at a French laugh)
SOCIETY: A voluntary coming together of people for common ends. If you scratch my back, I'll scream...don't touch me hehe.

Six...no we are still in French mode...
CULTURE: the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief and behavior that depends upon man's capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations...so it's us being able to teach our kids how to live because of how we lived. Or something like that :)

Sept...no I didn't mean to write September...
SUB-CULTURE: a culture derived from another culture...so for example "pop" culture or "agri"culture haha

Huit...this is the number 8 and is pronounced like the word "wheat" while trying to hock a loogy (huuuuuuuuwheat) try it...
FAMILY: a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head (?). One head? I won't ask.

Neuf...sounds like a strange sneeze but actually is the number 9 en Francais...
COMMUNITY: a unified body of individuals. I live in a unified body of houses stacked one ontop of the other but I still wouldn't call us a community because for the most part none of us get along so there has to be something more to this definition...stay zoned in for the final analysis.

Dix...kinda like "deese mangos taste like my brother's socks after he's gone hunting for three days straight" not that I know what they taste like that is...
SOCIO-ECONOMICS: relating to, or involving a combination of social and economic factors.

Onze...in French you don't ever really pronounce each letter so when pronouncing the number 11 drop the "e" and go with ONZ...
FILM: for the purposes of this class I'm going to assume that the word "film" refers to a representation by means of motion pictures and not a thin layer of skin :)

IN SUMMARY...

After defining the required terms it is easy to see that they each have a seperate and individual meaning but all play apart of the way human beings function. Going back thousands of years early man created ties between others of his species, forming families then making connections with other groups or families created communities forming societies that functioned productively together. And through the thousands of years these societies created an undocumented way of living, their culture. With this culture they made livings, formed alliances and raised their young to take part in the same culture. Their culture was not just that, but contains many facets or sub-cultures. Each part of the society worked together as a functioning socio-economy, through which the people were able to establish their own languages and arts. Today those early beginnings have transformed into advanced societies that have fostered brililant works of literature, art and film all of which allow their patrons a glimpse into the mindset and life experience of that person, their human experience and their culture; what makes them human.
I believe that all these terms will become noticeably more evident as the course goes on as we are expected to review films, art, literature, and the history of the Latin culture.

In closing this whole web page creation wasn't so bad...I hope that you all enjoyed your French lesson, now let's review:

Un = One

Trois = Three
Quatre = Four
Cinq = Five
Six = Six (WHOA!)
Sept = September no no SEVEN
Huit = Eight
