The Amber Alert Program was first established in response to the 1996 kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman in Arlington, Texas. The program is a cooperation between law enforcement agencies and broadcast media to immediately disperse pertinent information to the public when a child has been kidnapped. The law enforcement agencies involved in the case send identifying and case information to the media outlets to be immediately broadcast. This information also gets posted on electronic highway signs and is available via the Internet. The purpose of immediately dispersing the information in the event of a kidnapping is every second counts when trying to recover a child. The Amber Alert Program saves time in dispensing the information so quickly, but most importantly...the Amber Alert SAVES LIVES. |
