Killer by the Wayside

The black eyes speak of a hideous evil
That's about to attack
The slight frown
Shows a mind that knows no love
Only hatred, bitterness and destruction
Live in his world
So much distraught
He has brought
Into our world
But like others before him
We shall turn it into some kind of sick legacy
World-famous in just two short hours
Who's the criminal here ~
He or we?
Anxiously, minute by minute
Hour after hour
We wait for the news....
Who was he?
Where did he come from?
Why did he do it?
What kind of childhood did he have?
Dissect him, inspect him
Like a laboratory rat!
We are no better who feed on his creed
What about the victims left?
Do we really care?
No we don't!
We feign support....
But all the while....
We breathe a sigh of relief
Rather them than me ~
Who are we calling sick and twisted?

30th April, 1996

"This was written about the world-famous Port Arthur Massacre from 28th April 1996 when a lone gunman shot and killed 35 people visiting the Historic site and others. Here in Australia it is all we heard from the moment he started firing till the moment the police caught him in a Bed and Breakfast where he also killed the owners, burning the B&B to the ground. And we sat by the TV or radio, waiting to hear more juicy details about the man and his victims! With the anger and pain of my brother Peter's death still raw from a few weeks before, I was angry again at the media and their hunger for more details into the mind of Martin Bryant. And in all, two little girls and their mother were amongst the dead, leaving the husband and father without a family. The media had to dissect him too! Why couldn't they let him grieve in peace? Why?"
