Yad Vashem - The Holocaust Memorial

In the southeast corner of the modern city of Jerusalem is the memorial to the Holocaust.  There are several things to see.  These sculptures are on the outside of the building that shows the chronology. The upper one is a memorial to the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto and the forced march afterward.  The lower picture shows the new army recruits beginning their tour.  Along with Masada, all new recruits are given a tour of Yad Vashem.

Memorial trees at Yad Vashem

At Yad Vashem, There are two wide sidewalks called "The Avenue of Righteous Gentiles" for the non-jews whos saved Jewish lives during the Holocaust.  Between the sidewalks and on either side, trees are planted in their honor.  As more of these people have become known, trees have been planted all around Yad Veshem.  The tree on the left is in honor of Oskar Schindler and was planted by him.  The tree on the right is in honor of Corrie Ten Boom.  It is Jewish Custom to place a rock on top of a plack or headstone to show that the person is remembered.  You can see the stones by the two markers.

The Dome of the Rock

This is probably built on the site of the first and second Temples.  Beneath it is the peak of Mt Moriah, where Abraham was going to sacrifice Isaac.  The Dome was built soon after the Muslims took control of Jerusalem.  Most people think it is a mosque, though it is not.  The walls of a mosque must have a rectangular floor plan.  The dome has an octagonal one.

On The Streets of Jerusalem

On a lighter note, the shot on the left is of a street.  Not a sidewalk, a street.  Most are like this and it sure is tough getting your car through here!**  The shot on the right is inside the Jaffa gate, just outside the Tower of David Museum.  (You can see part of the wall in the upper left.)  Every once in a while I see this guy riding his camel in this area.  Maybe he's offering rides to the tourists.
**Disclaimer - Elizabeth says that you definitely
do not drive your car on these streets.  At least while your wife is in the car.
