Squirrels' Tree

Oak by the sidewalk,
twice as wide as I could reach around.

Six feet up,
the trunk is split and hollow.

Round the base,
three squirrels chase each other up and down.

Three young squirrels,
with frizzy tails and skinny, wiry bodies.

Another squirrel, larger,
watches from the center of the lawn.

I walk close;
they freeze a moment, then scatter.
