Chapter 12

            “I know Paula, she won’t do that.” Randy said shaking his head, “If she even thinks there’s a possibility that she has to raise the baby, she’ll freak and down something.”

            “Something like what?” Tina asked

            “I wouldn’t put anything past her.” Randy said, “I have to try and convince her to change her mind about things.”

            “Do you think you’ll be able to do that by tomorrow night?”

            “I don’t know, but I have to try.” Randy said, “Thank you for your help.”

            “Let me give you our business card.” Tina said pulling a card from the holder and handing it to Randy, “If anything comes up, call and we’ll help you as best we can.”

            Randy took the card and smiled some, “Thank you…all of you for your help.”

            The other lawyers nodded their heads and went back to their offices and Tina walked Randy to the door.

Randy walked back to his car and headed back to his hotel room, ‘I have to find away to convince Paula otherwise when it comes to the baby.’ he thought to himself as he drove down the street. As he was thinking, a thought occurred to him. He made a u-turn and headed to see Paula. When he got to stoplight, he pulled his cell phone out and dialed Paula’s number.

            “It’s Randy; I’m heading to see you. I want to take you away for the weekend so we can talk about all of this.” He paused, “Don’t worry about the papers that Liz gave me. I took care of it all.” He clicked his cell off and folded the papers that Liz gave him and placed them in the glove box of the car. When the light turned green Randy gunned the engine and sped off in the direction of JC house.

            Since Karen had yet to find out about Paula’s other life, she was livid while listening to Liz spill everything. A couple of times she tried to correct what Liz was saying but was shot cold glances.

Liz finished what she was saying and looked at Paula, “Did I miss anything?”

Paula crossed her arms and looked at a spot on the wall. She refused to dignify any of what was said about her with a response.

“This is your turn to speak up for yourself!” Karen said, “What do you have to say about what Liz said?”

“I don’t even know why I bothered to come back.” Paula said, “You already have your mind made up that I’m the bad one in all this.”

“No one forced you to cheat on my son!” Karen yelled

“Why aren’t you taking any responsibility for this, Lizanne?” Paula demanded, “You’re the one who introduced me to your cousin!”

“Don’t you dare blame this on me!” Liz said, “I introduced you to Justin, Chris, Joey and Lance. Did you fuck all them too?!”

“Yeah!” Paula said walking towards the stairs, “And you know what, your husband was the best of them all.” she walked up the stairs, “Don’t bother calling me for dinner, I won’t be here!”

            Rage flashed through Liz, she was so tempted to show Paula a thing or two, but she knew that if she did anything, there was a chance the baby would get hurt and she didn’t want to do that.

She grabbed her keys and purse before looking at Karen, “The baby shower’s off. I’m going home.”

“Liz, I hope you didn’t believe what she said about sleeping with the guys…” Karen said as she grabbed her arm, “You two were both heated and said things you didn’t mean.”

“I meant every word I said. I know she didn’t sleep with Lance, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t try.” Liz said, “I just need to leave and be with my husband and daughter.”

Karen nodded her head and released her grasp of Liz, “I’ll make sure she doesn’t go too far.” Liz smiled and walked out of the house and to her car to go home.

            While Paula was up in her room, she noticed she had a message. She checked her voicemail and sighed when she heard Randy’s voice. ‘He wants to take me away for the weekend? Josh won’t let me…Wait, I’m an adult, and I can do what I want.’ She called Randy back and told him she’d be packed and waiting.

            Thirty minutes later there was a knock at the door. Karen went to the door and opened it, “Hel…what do you want?” she asked when she saw Randy

            “To see my girlfriend.” Randy said, “Is she ready?”

            “Hold on.” Karen closed the door, walked up the stairs and knocked on Paula’s door, “Randy’s here.” Karen walked back down the stairs and into the living room.

            Paula waited a moment before opening the door, walking out and closing it behind her. She adjusted the overnight bag on her shoulder and quietly walked down the stairs, “I’ll be back later.” Paula said before walking out of the house and closing the door.

            “Ready?” Randy asked

            “Yeah, and I don’t want to know where we’re going.” Paula said, “Just take me away from here.” She walked towards his car and stood by the passenger side door waiting for him to unlock it.

            “Is everything okay?” Randy asked when he got to the car

            “Things are just fine. I really enjoy getting chewed out by Karen and Liz.” she said opening the door and getting in.

            Randy closed the door and walked to the driver side door, opened it and got in. He started the car and they were on their way, “What exactly happened?”

            Paula shook her head, “I don’t want to talk about it.”

            Randy sighed and continued driving. Soon after they were on the road, Paula fell asleep and Randy was beginning to get tired himself. He pulled into the parking lot of the first motel he saw. He parked the car, went to the office and asked for a room with two beds. He paid in cash for two nights. He went to the room, unlocked the door and then went back to this car. He woke Paula up and when she got out, though she wasn’t fully awake, he helped her to the room. He helped her into the bed and went back for her bags.

            ‘This’ll have to do for now.’ He thought to himself.
