The Hotel Dieu du Beaune was an hospital built by the Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy in 1443, mainly to provide a hospice for those suffering from poverty and illness. It continued as a functioning, self-sufficient, charitable hospice until 1971, when the medical facilities were moved to a modern facility. Part of the Hotel Dieu is now a museum, and part is still used as a retirement home for the town's elderly. The glazed tiles still hold their vibrant colors. They are thought to have originated in Eastern Europe, but swept through Burgundy and are now considered typical of the region. |

"Where's Tabitha?"
This is one example of the Mideival ironwork typical of the region. |

Yes, small, but what can you really expect with 130 passengers and 20 crew on a boat that has to be small enough to fit through the locks?! But, really, two very small beds *sniff* |

The Hotel Dieu was built above a tributary of the Rhone River, and the waste from the hospital was sent down through a trap door in the floor to the river below. |

These sycamores are planted along the streets and in parkinlots and around public areas to provide shade during the summers. Though it was a slightly warm 82 degrees which we were there, many considered it hot. |

Beaune is the center of the wine area, Cote de Beaune, and produces some excellent wines. Tabiths didn't find it very interesting, being far too young to drink, but she did enjoy playing in the vines. |

I found this knocker and doorknob rather interesting - half expecting the hand to grab me if I tried to use it, or the door to open up to some Hobbit hole in the Shire. |

I looked back from the quai toward the boat and got an unmistakable feeling that I was about to meet a tiny caterpillar who would invite me into his home to "meet the missus?" |
