| Tuesday 2 October 2001. Las Vegas. After our interview at the Hard Rock Hotel, the four distinguished members of SOAD will head to off to play tonights Pledge of Allegiance show which has just rolled into town with Slipknot and Rammstein in tow. As Vegas is the adult version of Disneyland. Its the kingdom of entertainment and credit cards. You can't do anything in this city of sin without cashflow. Even in the most humble hotels, restaurants and bars, shot machines lie in wait. And if it isn't them it's the video games, poker table, black jack and roulette. If you're not completely broke by sunset, then the showgirls will be happy to let you slide your last few bucks into their skimpy, sequined G-strings. Las Vegas has no scruples, theres even an Anarchy in Vegas, slot machine adorned with a picture of Sid Vicious. This gaming temple symbolises the American dream in all its glory. In theory anyone can leave here rich, but in practice, its the epitome of excess. Nicknamed Sin City, Las Vegas is the work of megalomaniac millionaires. It is home to the worlds largest hotels like the MGM with its 5,000 rooms where movies like Casino and Rocky IV were filmed. Over hotels offer reconstructions of Paris, with the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe alongside an Egyptian pyramid, a replica of San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge and monuments from Imperial Rome Daron Malakian hates Las Vegas, despite his incredible folklore. Theres nothing to do but spend money, he moans. And losing puts me in a bad mood. Id rather be in Oklahoma or another American shithole. Bass player Shavo Odadjian, who is used tom the guitarists mood swings, counts his dollars and ignores him. These are the two live wires of the group, always close to the edge or on the lookout for some trick to play on the placid vocalist Serj Tankian. That guy never gets upset, explains Shavo. He Serj! Dont you ever get pissed off? Serj, lying on the hotel room bed, just smiles. Difficult to find more Zen than that in the presence of the extroverted chatter boxes Shavo and Daron. Drummer John Dolmayan seems to be the thinker of the group. This place does it for me, he confesses to us quietly. Ive just won $3,00 on a $100 bet on roulette. You just have to know how to play smart and when to stop. SOAD in real life are along way from the image that have been attributed to them that of highly politicised band. This quartet is not here to fill the space left by Rage Against the Machine. SOAD are developing their own personality and appear to have many strings to their bow. Hence the diversity of Toxicitys themes, from police brutality (Deer Dance), to the penal system (Prison Song), orgies (Bounce), the craziness of tours (Psycho) and Charles Mansons vision of the world (ATWA). Whilst Daron, Shavo, and Serj get some well-earned food, drummer John stays to talk. |
