A Good Story

...and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7 [NIV]

I visited someone at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI yesterday. As I arrived at the hospital, I located the visitor parking lot and pulled in to find a place to park. I was surprised to discover such a small lot for such a large downtown hospital. I drove around the lot for a few minutes looking for an empty space. It didn't take long to figure out that I was not on my mission alone, but there were several people searching for that allusive place to park.

As I drove around the lot, I began looking for someone walking to their car so that I could follow them to their place and capture it before someone else arrived. After loosing five or six places to other searching cars, I realized that I would have to be more aggressive in my hunting. It was "every man for himself." Finally after at least 20 minutes, and without being too aggressive and rude, I snuck into a parking space as other vehicles tried to beat me to it. I finally arrived, but not before I was frustrated and angry.

As I thought about that experience, I remembered the search that Mary and Joseph made to find a place to give birth to the Savior of the world. As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, is their room for Jesus to live in your life? Has your life become so filled with other things that Jesus has to search for an open space and try and slip in before anything else comes to take the place? What a stark reminder I had yesterday to make room for Jesus. This is a busy time of year; one that tends to creep up on us and fill our lives before we even realize what hit us. Will Jesus have to fight for a place to park in our heart this Christmas?

In the parking lot close to the hospital was a helicopter landing pad. It was big with plenty of room for important deliveries to land. It was a place of prominence. When they come in with a patient they don't have to look for a parking space. Is there a place of prominence in your heart for Jesus? What do you need to clear away so that Jesus can sit on the throne of your heart? Don't be caught without a parking space available for Jesus.

Blessings!
