"Smokeybones"
"Smokeybones" came about in the Rocky Mountains, when a young man used a portion of the pipeline to create a hand-built barbeque smoker. The restaurant chain is a family-oriented dining experience. It features the best barbeque flavor in town. It has now become an award-winning barbeque lodge across the east coast.
My visit came about because my friend and I were looking for a restaurant to have dinner. I had mentioned to him earlier that I had an upcoming paper, and the topic was to be about a restaurant. Well, that day we ended up in Virginia Beach, in the Pembroke area, due to previous engagements. As we turned off of Independence Boulevard, and onto Virginia Beach Boulevard, a sweet barbeque aroma befriended our noses. Simultaneously, we looked at each other; both of us had the expression that read, "Where is that smell coming from?" We scanned the intersection in hopes that we would find it. My buddy spoke up and suggested that we eat at the "Smokeybones", that was the only possible place where that infectioness smell of barbeque could be floating from.
As we walked through yellow-stained double doors, we were befriended by two smiling hostesses, which swiftly sat us. Walking to our seats made me feel like a vacationer at a cabin in the Pocono's. You can't help but to notice the fireplace straight ahead, the long yellow imitation wood beams along the ceiling, and the country-style furniture. They also had several well-sized televisions, spaced about a foot apart, all tuned to different channels, hanging from the ceiling in rows, so that every guest can see. Now you may ask, "How am I suppose to know what's going on, if I can't hear the show?" Well, they thought of that too. As we were being seated, the hostess pointed out a black box, which sat with the salt and pepper, with five buttons and a knob. She explained that we could select televisions one through five by pressing the corresponding button. After that, we would need to turn the knob until it clicked, and we would be able to hear that particular channel. To say that I was amazed by the ambience is an understatement; I was floored. Combining that with the suffocating smell of barbeque was awakening my starving appetite. I was ready to chow down.
To my amazement, the restaurant dually used their menus as place mats. I love the idea of this because it cuts down on the germs that spread by using plastic-covered menus over and over, sifting through a different pair of hands everyday. They have an alluring variety of selections on their menu. For example, like some barbeque houses, they feature baby-back ribs, hand pulled pork, crispy catfish, smoked turkey, grilled chicken, even barbeque shrimp. Majority of their meats are grilled, that's how they obtain that authentic smoke flavor that we all love.
Shortly after being seated, the waitress came and took our drink order; we were prepared to order so she wrote that down as well. She was very prompt about bringing us our drinks, and she informed us of the estimated wait time for our food. No more than ten minutes passed, which is a reasonable time span for what we ordered, and two steaming hot plates were placed in front of us. My buddy ordered the combination platter, which only cost $11.99. Included were a rack of baby-back ribs that were drowned in sweet and tangy barbeque sauce. Also, you get a second choice of meat; he chose a huge smoked sausage. The exaggerated size reminded me of those fat pencils that everyone used to have in kindergarten class. The two sides he chose were mashed potatoes with gravy and baked beans. Now, no swine touches these lips of mine, but his plate was so appealing that I was having second thought of what to order. My combination plate included a quarter of barbeque chicken and succulent smoked turkey. Both meats were so tender that a knife was of no need. My two sides were fresh broccoli florets and golden french fries. As big as our eyes were, they surely were no match for our stomachs. The size of the portions insured that we would be carrying doggie bags home. During this time though, our waitress made sure that we were with everything that we needed, making sure that we had our refills and enough napkins. Nearing the end of our meal, which she could tell because we sat back rubbing our bellies, she retrieved two to-go boxes and our check. Surprisingly, the cost for our meals, including drinks, came to about thirty-three dollars. The pricing is fair and the food is great too. They also have a website available online with their menu posted; the website address is www.smokeybones.com.
This establishment is certainly on the rise and shouldn't be underestimated. With the best-tasting barbeque in town and an unsurpassed customer experience, "Smokeybones" will continue to grow and become as general as places like "Applebees" or "TGIF".
