Living Together

Carol Thornton

Carol Thornton

Played by Victoria Chambers

Carol was the down trodden woman who, right from the start, had nothing but trouble.
We first met Carol when she was six months pregnant. She had just moved into Roddington with one of her twin daughters Faye. She met everyone at Joes Coffee Shop and was soon being visited by Ian and invited to Michael & Anitas engagement party.
Carol starts to have problems when she has trouble with her unborn baby and sure enough when it comes to the delivery day they discover the baby was dead at birth. This is Carols third major problem. Her first one which the viewer didnt see was that she got pregnant with her twin daughters at the age of fourteen, she later confesses this to Sandy Kendrick in the second series. The second major disaster to hit her was her husband Steve leaving her and taking Sonia, the other twin with him.
As Carol tries to rebuild her life and look forward to Christmas more tragedy hits the family. As Faye is walking to Nimmy's Christmas party she is knocked down by a drunk Joe Newnham and later dies in hospital.
Carol Thornton Because of the problems Anita has been having, Carol asks if she wants to stay with her for a while, showing the caring side of her. But as she is trying to cope with the death of now two children and trying to help sort out her friends problem, who should turn up at the door but her husband Steve with daughter Sonia. Steve states that he is willing to give their marriage another go if she wants to.
The three of them buy their own place in Burrell Crescent and start again, at first everything is going well until Carol notices that Steve is working late an awful lot. He states that work is busy, but when she confronts his boss Alex and asks her why her husband is working so much. Alex states that if anything he has been leaving early from work. Carol starts to become suspicious.
When Carol asks about where hes been going after work he states that hes been shopping and Carol navely believes him. Meanwhile, Carols daughter Sonia is seeing a boy called Tyler, who works at the same garage as Steve. Carol thinks hes no good and doesnt like Sonia hanging around with him and this causes no end of arguments within the household. This comes to a conclusion at Sonias 16th birthday party when Carol throws Tyler out and Sonia goes with him.
Carol Thornton During all this, Carol has more talks with Alex and eventually it is proved that Steve is having an affair. Carol confronts him with this and he doesnt denies it, in fact he tells her that its not a supprise because she is an unfit mother who managed to kill two of her children off.
Carol can not believe what she is hearing and her whole world falls down around her. She thinks that she is left with nothing Then Sonia comes back home; Tyler convinced her that she should be with her mum.

Carol is the one we all feel sorry for and thank our lucky stars that we are not her. If it can go wrong it will. Shes probably the sort of woman who buys a pack of tea only to discover that there are no tea leaves in the bags.
Vicky plays Carol very well, it took her a while to get into the character, but the second series Vicky shows how bad Carol can feel. The scene between Carol and Alex in the garage office when Alex tells Carol about Steves affair has real atmosphere and you really want Carol to knock seven bells out of Steve, which she does.

In a proposed third series Carol was to join forces with Sandy Kendrick and Alex Freeman and open a horse riding school, some good luck for a change
