Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana by seven school teachers. Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Bessie Mae Downey Martin, Vivan White Marbury, Cubena McClure, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside.  They founded the sorority based on the principles of Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service. Sigma Gamma Rho strives for excellence and committment to service through our slogan, "Greater Service, Greater Progress."

 
Sigma Gamma Rho has become an international service organization composed of women from every profession.  The sorority offers its members opportunitites to develop their unique talents through leadership training and involvement in sorority activities. Sigma Gamma Rho has a proud history of offering service wherever chapters exist.

 
Sigma Gamma Rho supports the many national programs and affiliations with other organizations. Currently there are over 450 chapters, undergraduate and graduate.  There are over 82,000 members in various parts of the world including Africa, the Caribbean, England, Europe, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas.

 
Sigma Gamma Rho's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community.  Public service, leadership development, and education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's program and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho, Incorporated addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.
