One of the best things you can do as a beginning fighter is to
ask questions. I have not met a fighter who is not willing to help
a new person. Never be afraid to approach one of the fighters
if you have questions about shots, blocks, armor making or anything
else that may come to mind.
Don't have a 'grip of death' on your sword handle! If you let your
fingers rest on the trigger you will find that your shots will carry
through a lot more smoothly. I am trying to relearn how to grip my
sword after having spent a lot of time holding onto it too tightly.
Try different swords and shields before you get your mind set on a
specific style. I have gone through a couple of different styles already.
It might take awhile to find the right one.
Warm up before you practice! Stretch, get your muscles ready to work.
Limbering up can help prevent aches later!
Take time to study the other fighters. Bring a notebook to practice and
jot down what you see. From how they start their fights (placement of sword)
to how they handle their shield. Watch how they move - are they always the
aggressor? How many shots do they make in order to get an opening on their
opponent? Do they have special shots like wraps that their opponents have
a hard time blocking? All of these things can help you with your own
fighting.
If you feel uncomfortable about fighting someone, do not be afraid to say so.
Sometimes it can be overwhelming as a new person to stand in front of a Knight,
however, understand that by telling someone you are new to fighting you will
find any fighter more than happy to teach you!!!
