| Kempsey Koori Artists Aboriginal Corporation is a media based ARTS CORPORATION which promotes, and sells indigenous arts and crafts ,both contemporary and traditional from the Mid North Coast. The area is predominantly the traditional land of the Dhungutti and Gumbangir Nations ,and the Shire of Kempsey has the largest Aboriginal Population in NSW, As well as being the third largest indigenous population in Australia. Many other nations live in the region including the Birapai, the Bundjalung, Gamilaroy and Wiradgeri nations. The artwork of this region is unique and recognised throughout the world as having a very specific stamp that denotes it's origins . As many of the people of this region have lived under periods of extreme oppression, and due to it's high proportion of "stolen generation' people, art has been seen as a tool of restoration of the culture. Therefore much of the art has a contemporary flavour, which reflects the artists search for his identity and culture rthrough his individuality. I beleive that in the future the Macleay Valley artists will become some of the most sought after indigenous artists in the world, as was the forefather of indigenous artistic revival here, The late Robert Campbell Junior, whose works hang in the national Gallery, and from whom many of the present day artists studied their craft. The Art of the Macleay can be viewed by visiting the gallery on the corner of Forth and Cyde Streets in Kempsey. The gallery is open on request. |
