Malaysia: May 23-30, 2001
Heather and I never had a honeymoon after our wedding in 1998.  I would have to say that this vacation has come closest to being a honeymoon since we got married.

Malaysia is located in south-east Asia between Indonesia and Thailand.  It is situated just above the equator, making for very hot, tropical weather.  We went to Club Med at Cherating Beach, on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia.
We relaxed for the most part while we were at Club Med.  However, we did enjoy some special activities.  I had a taste of a Balinese massage - full body! - and Heather would have done the same except that being pregnant meant she had to settle for a facial.

We had our choice of swimming locations - the pool or the beach.  The beach was very nice.  A nice breeze from the sea made the temperatures more bearable.  But most of our free time was spent pool-side, sipping drinks.
We also enjoyed a day excursion to a place called Chini Lake.  You can see a lotus hat in the picture to the right.  It is made from the lotus flowers that grow in the bayou.

This excursion also allowed us to visit a tribal village where the village chief is the father of most of the children (!).  Malaysian men may have multiple wives.  Below is the chief.
In the resort, we got to see monkeys up close.  We could not feed them because they get violent when there's food around. However, we stood pretty close to them to get some pictures.
Our final day was spent touring KL - Kuala Lumpur.  The city is modernizing rapidly, but its history can still be seen in the form of various ethnic villages and British colonial architecture.  The downtown area is very modern, and there is a beautiful public park located adjacent to the Petronas Towers.  I'm standing in the park in the picture on the right.
All in all, it was a great vacation. Sorry it had to end, but maybe we'll get a chance someday to return.
